Hey everyone, I am currently a NAPSter (applied for class of 2022, am now Navy CO 2023) and I got appointed here around this time last year. I remember being thouroughly confused about NAPS and I did not figure out anything until actually going through it. I would have loved to have known a current NAPSter with fresh information to have answered all of my questions, so that’s what I’m opening this up for. Ask anything!
Edit: also can answer recruited athlete questions
My daughter applied to USNA and just received an acceptance into NAPS for class 2020. She received two nominations when she was applying. Does she have to go through whole nomination process again next year or will these still count?
Also, did you think the year at NAPS helped you succeed in Naval academy?
thx

They don’t count for the following year. She has to reapply to all nom sources for which she is eligible. Try to get that done before I Day. (And she will have to submit proof of application to NAPS). Many congressmen/senators have abbreviated apps for prep students.
And yes, it is a valuable year.

Your dupe question on noms has been answered in the other thread. Usually someone pops up every o answer.

NAPS is indeed a golden ticket. USNA has essentially said “we are saving you a place in 2024, just be successful at NAPS.” She will have a year away from home in a military environment, so she’ll have that handled when she reports in as a Plebe - military time/jargon/customs/room inspections/marching/regimented days. She’ll get any homesickness handled. She’ll be with like-minded people, and report on I-Day for the Class of 2024 with a complete set of known friends and an additional year of maturity and self-confidence. Win-win all around.

@momof candidate . Congratulations. Our Daughter received her NAPS Appointment on February 8th. I have already been informed by @falconchic88 that there is a Facebook page for NAPS parents …. I believe she said the FB page is something like NAPS 2020 Parents Only Facebook.

I am not a Facebook user, so it will be a learning curve for me. I will have to ask my wife if she uses FB.

@moak has also been very helpful. His daughter is at NAPS right now.

As for Reapplying for Nominations, our Daughter has already contacted her CongressWoman and 2 Senators, and the Letter of Recommendations and SAT scores can be reused -- should be true in your Daughters case too. She should be able to get the 3 Applications re-done quickly, and just send her Updated HS Transcript to them. So, it shouldn't be as much work this time. I suggest like @Islandmom4 above, have your daughter get them done quickly when they open, typically on May 1st.

No guarantees, but very close. You have to successfully complete all aspects of NAPS. You are expected to apply for nominations from all sources for which you are eligible, but if you fail to obtain one, a nom will be found for you.

Yes she will have to reapply. Same thing happened to me, but she will automatically get a nomination- you just have to apply for the purpose of upholding standards against directs. And yes NAPS has helped me in many more ways than I thought it would.

If you get into NAPS they see you becoming a midshipman, you just have to prove you can handle the rigors and uphold the standards they set. For me the standards seemed easy (2.2 minimum GPA, pass prt, and no significant offenses) but you would be surprised how difficult the balance can be. At NAPS we are told they make the academics harder in some aspects in order to over prepare us (which is why the gpa req is so low- we get the low grades here but are mega prepared for plebe year). Don’t worry about your nomination.

There are no guarantees. The official word is that if you successfully complete the course of instruction at NAPS, you will be admitted to USNA, but there are a number of reasons you could not "successfully complete" and get an Appointment, including academics, conduct, aptitude, etc.
That being said, if you keep your nose clean and get the 2.2, you should get in.

Yes, you do need a nomination -- all NAPS candidates are required to apply for all Nominations that they are eligible for. However, if they don't get admitted off the MOC slate, they will get in with a SecNav nomination.

I have met recruited athletes who were offered NAPS. What is the percentage of non recruited athletes? Just curious.

.
I think the question should be % of Recruited Athletes at NAPS …. because every one else must be deemed CFA ready I suppose …. Most candidates are Athletes too, or are very Athletically postured.
.

Probably 20-25%

Continue sending admissions email updates of new volunteer hours, job promotions, leadership positions, sports accomplishments, etc. I would also throw in there if I met with someone important and things like that so they could know me more personally. I knew I would probably get into NAPS but I would send emails to admissions twice a month anyway as though I was anticipating a direct appointment and this actually made my name familiar with the board to help my overall case. Do not leave your application stagnant, ever!

Thank you for answering these questions! I’m curious when you say you kept updating your application and that you never left it stagnant. I’ve completed my application and am a CPR but it’s still possible to email admissions and update them? Or once your application is complete are you done?
