My son just received his BFE and in it are instructions for sending paperwork back. The terminology used is to submit an original copy of a birth certificate as well as a social security card. The verbiage is rather confusing and I don't want to read too much into it and make it harder than it is. Original copy--one he can copy at home on our printer or one that is notarized from the clerk of court? I know we can do that with the birth certificate but not sure on the social security card.

They are requesting original, official documents. It's important that your appointee has a valid passport, which will also require an official birth certificate, so make sure you either have two official birth certificates, or take care of the passport first before sending the documents to CGA. When you mail the documents to CGA, I always recommend putting tracking and signature verification on the envelope. Those original documents will be returned to the appointee on Day One, or within the next few days. The swab can then keep those documents in their lock box. Also, from this point on, make 3 copies of EVERYTHING you submit to CGA. Appointees are required to bring one complete set of copies on Day One. Parents are also required to carry a complete set of copies on Day One. The last set you can keep at home for safe keeping.

Congrats to your son! My DD received her BFE also. I plan on ordering a certified birth certificate and going to Social Security Administration to obtain another Social Security Card.

Thank you very much! So glad I asked the question. I was on another page entirely. Thank you for making it clear.
