Greetings (insert my name)!

You have been recommended by the United States Coast Guard Academy Admissions office as an applicant we would like to interview. This year, the Coast Guard Academy is requiring interviews from applicants we would like amplifying information from to make a more informed Admissions decision.

Anybody else received this? What does this mean?

exactly that...they want to interview you for further details

From what I know, this is good. My friends who applied for EA had been requested for an interview and they are now part of class of 2023! Good luck on your interview.

Congrats! It means your application has moved ahead to the interview phase. You should hear something from your interviewer in the next couple of weeks. When you do, reply quickly and set it up. Good luck!!

there are currently 3 categories of applicants - those who can be accepted without an interview, those who can be declined without an interview, and everyone in the middle.

Did you receive this via email or regular mail. Just nervous about lost emails since it happened with the DodMerb request. Has anything changed on your Bears Den checklist since you got this request?

Unfortunately, I was interviewed but was not accepted in EA. I was deferred so I am still hoping though!

The first contact that I had regarding an interview was a phone call from the admissions partner in my state. We set up a time and place on the phone and then he emailed me confirmation. From what I am seeing, this might be unusual. Maybe there is not really a set way of scheduling the interview.

IMHO an interview is a good thing! My DS was interviewed by his admissions officer, and they learned a lot about each other, and it made my DS want to be a CG Officer even more. It is always nice getting answers one on one, and having an admissions person be able to judge you. My DS has indicated that even if he is not selected for the Academy, that after he completes college he will try for OCS or Direct Commissioning, he wants a CG Career, and is willing to go to whatever lengths he has to in order to realize his dream.

Honestly this is probably the best change they've made to the application process. During my entire tenure at the Academy the interview process was optional and many of us felt that if it were mandatory it may have helped screen out those who lack certain personal skills that are fundamentally requisite to be a good officer.

I'm not trying to come across as arrogant, but I firmly believe that there are certain skills that you need to have to be a successful officer that you cannot teach: simple things such as being able to maintain eye contact, hold a conversation and be personable. An interview, even one over Facetime, would help screen out people who lack these qualities but who might otherwise seem quite qualified on paper.

DS2018 fully concurs. Interview is important to access the personal skillsets.

This does not align with what we were told at CFAD this fall. We were told and I quote but its a paraphrase from memory "every person accepted will have been interviewed, without exception. No interview = no chance of acceptance."

Have there been any outliers thus far to disprove that statement?

We were also told that all RA decisions would be made public 15 April. Putting 2+2 together I am presuming that if our daughter hasn't been asked to interview by April 1 at the latest, the writing is on the wall.

Yes - there have been offers of admission without an interview. You heard from one in the other thread - the self prep kid.

Hadn't read that until just now. Sounds like the new Captain blew up his initial plan from the fall. What's that they say - everyone has a plan until they get hit? I really did like the sound of the process they intended to roll it out, as it was very clear about the progression and the timing. Now things are back to reading tea leaves, but oh well. The possibility that one of her logins or phone calls will define her next year certainly keeps it interesting.

How did the interview go? My DS has his on Friday and is kind of nervous. Any tips?

My best interview tips are fairly standard. Don't be late. Be dressed well, good handshake, good eye contact. Remember the name of your interviewer and try and use it or at least sir, ma'am. Be familiar with the Coast Guard and its missions. Be prepared to talk about why you want to go there. Be specific. Know why you think you are a good fit for the Coast Guard and not just any Academy. Be prepared with something for when the interviewer asks if you have any questions for them.

I hope it goes well!
