Next appointment rush?

If you look back through the posts of a lot of the people who have heard in the last couple of days several seem to be principal noms. (Not that I'm obsessively combing through everyone's posts for a morsel of comfort, oh no....)

It stands to reason that USAFA scoops up the LOA's first, and the athletes, then the principal noms (who they have to appoint if qualified) as they try to piece the jigsaw puzzle together of who is going to attend in 2023.

So I figure we are just at the principal nom stage. Sometime after that comes the national pool, then the waiting list (for places that get turned down).

It's a process.
To me it seems to be slightly different. Turn backs from last year obviously here first, then LOA folks, then as I saw it and through people I’ve talked to, those who had their application done on or before 1 November (early action of sorts) get their appointments, then preppies and falcon scholars, and last but not least regular applicants. The only reason I disagree with your bit on principal noms is because I am a principal nom and haven’t heard anything yet.

Just remember that while we may be able to decipher a little bit, it doesn’t come close to how complex it is for admissions to fit everyone in. Appointments could be released everyday from now until 15 April, some of us who maybe don’t get in could still get an appointment for ‘23 before it’s too late! Best of luck to those still waiting, I feel your pain. I know it sucks when you see everyone else posting how they got in, or when your friends have their appointments in hand and you’re still anxiously checking your portal and your inbox.
I love Carm23's use of the phrase "for admissions to fit everyone in." My DD is a '22. I had lots of conversations with parents from around the country. I'm NOT an ALO so my opinion is only opinion. But, I believe that if USAFA wants you, they will find a way to take you. I've heard of kids from one state getting assigned to the Congressman from another state who didn't use all noms. All this speculation and talk of principle noms and slates is, to me, a fun way to kill time while waiting. Bottom line is, if USAFA wants you, I think they will find a way to get you. That's why, people on this forum who have been around many years will tell you to concentrate on your own application, test scores, etc.... and not worry so much about the others in your district & state.

Does anyone know if they release appointments by most qualified to least qualified, or if it is by district or if it is just at random? Trying to get a grasp on how they release because there hasn’t been many from my state in the thread.
Yes they take the most qualified first. BUT, we don't know what the admin board deems "most qualified" so it's only speculation why it happened like that when one person receives LOA (non-athlete) in December and another with seemingly equal application waits until April or later. Also, remember that only 10% are on this forum so a small state might not get represented at all.

Hello Everyone, Like most people in this forum my DS is still waiting to hear from his MOC. This is a very hard time for all of us the waiting is one of the hardest part so far. He has already received a AFROTC scholarship level 7 to go to the University of Hawaii but is still hopeful in getting a Direct Appointment. He has a single Nomination from his Congressman. His Sat is 600/math 640/verbal 1240 and his GPA is only a 3.72. He is the Captain of his Wrestling team of 65 kids and has earned 4 Varsity letters. Does my DS stand a chance for Direct appointment or Prep school or does anyone know if any of your class mates made it in with low scores like this?

and his GPA is only a 3.72.

I am not sure of his chances, but he looks qualified. Is that 3.72 the GPA from his portal that was recalculated by Admissions? After reading the instructions to candidates PDF, they state the average GPA calculated by admissions is a 3.85. I’m curious to know where all the recently appointed candidates fall on the GPA spectrum. Did their GPA go up or down after recalculation?

My GPA has always been listed as 4.03 which it’s never actually been. Right now it’s a 4.21 so I’m confused by the whole GPA thing.

Coastal2024 - I tried to private message you regarding HI - can you message me?

Nice ACT ! alwayshungry8

1. I truly believe everyone has a chance - the WCS is really important. Academics make up 50% of the WCS, but I see plenty of people with high GPA's not get in, and others with lower numbers getting in.

2. My son's score was 4.93 on the portal (that was his weighted GPA at the time). It hasn't changed on the portal. So I am not sure about this whole re-weighting thing.

@Moondog Thank you! The whole reconfiguration of the GPA is interesting. What does WCS stand for/mean? I’ve heard two different acronyms.

Sure it could be they’re going district to district or they are still going through all the principal noms and you’ll hear very soon.

I don’t see how they can get to the national pool without dealing with the 435 principal noms first.
What is a principal nom

See https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/nominations-faq.33450/ - members of congress have the ability to submit their slates with a principal nominee, although many just send competitive slates to each academy.

Stealth_81 Do the candidates compete against candidates in their congressional district before they compete against candidates in the national pool how does that work?

Being the excel nerd that I am I tried to back into appointments remaining. What I realized was SA admissions is incredibly complicated and you can't really figure it out with simple math & excel. My methodology is flawed but you can run your own "back of the napkin" calculation to get a data point.

I took the names posted on the forum (117 this morning), sorted by state, then appointment source. I then assumed (which is flawed), that appointments of the 117 were charged in the following order: presidential, senatorial, congressional, Lead, AFROTC. I know the total members in House and Senate by state. I subtracted from total possible (435 + 100) what has been posted here by state assuming my charging order to arrive at appointments available by state for senate & congressional.

Big, big, big, flaw is that I don't know how many appointments were actually awarded, I just know what people posted. I arrived at 71 available senate and 363 congressional in total remaining. Again you have to subtract out actual appointments which I did not do. So the numbers I just gave are too high for available remaining. For a couple states I had a negative number for senate appointments available, that means the actual charging of appointments order was different from my assumption. Plus, I didn't consider NWL list yet. That's another 150 available appointments. I'm just trying to provide a starting number for you statically minded folks.

I have a headache now.

Since I posted all my negativity on this thread on Wednesday we've had some good news. Not an appointment, but the 4 year NROTC scholarship to Texas A&M. As I run the numbers this is HUGE for him. He also received some little scholarships so it looks like he will be about $3k short each semester (to start with) but he has loans available to cover most of that. NROTC pays for cadet uniforms (!), and will send him on summer cruises, on top of what I already knew which is it covers tuition and books. As I spend more time looking at TAMU Corps of Cadets I'm getting excited for him. And he plans to reapply to the academies, so as long as he does well I think success in the Corps and in Plebe year classes will make him even more competitive for next year. But honestly, if TAMU ends up being his alma mater I'm feeling like his path is not much different than if he landed an appointment. He is also pretty excited about Navy (no offense). It's really cool to not be so stressed out and feel super awesome about his path. I look forward to taking the picture with the well known fold out claiming he's the next Aggie.aggie 2023.jpg

Congrats !!!! I know lots of Aggies and Longhorns. TAMU is not only respected for its Corp but its academically a power house. Their graduates are highly prized. Aggieland is a great option.
