HERNDON - Class of 2022

I think it was about 50/50 for us in terms of parent attendance. There is just overall a lot more parent attendance and involvement on everything then what we had. Nothing wrong with not attending. Your DS will have a blast with his newly recognized 4/C classmates and enjoy a nice dinner out in town. I am sure he will send you some great pics with his buddies after all gross.

Not so sure about the pictures. I think he is allergic to cameras.

DW and I will be there, in the background, enjoying the energy and the joy of "plebes no more". Getting through plebe year is a big accomplishment. No need to be in the front row (there will be a YouTube video of the whole event) or interfere with DS' time with classmates.

I think I am in the minority here, but neither DH or myself have the slightest desire to attend. Our plebe no more will want to hang with buddies. It’ll be hot. And crowded. We would rather watch online. And go to the yard when it’s calm on another weekend.
I love the diversity of it all... DS got so excited and said it will make the event even that much more memorable for him. The event itself - very low expectations for me (as you describe). Celebrating after - high expectations. We specially talked with him to support him hanging with his friends also.

Times have changed. I don't think my parents even knew when Herndon was, let alone counted down the days. I remember a crowd watching , so suspect some parents were there...but no bleachers, etc. It was really more a chance of our class to go out and bond (aka drink beer).

Remember that it coincided with the first day of graduation week so some Firstie families are already in the yard and will watch the festivities. When my son was graduating, I came down at the beginning and the rest of the family over the weekend. I remember stopping to watch Herndon for a while and then heading over to the NAVSTA for golf with son and his roommate so that they coould "Test out" their new clubs (made by yours truly) which were a grad gift to son and damn cheap for roommate.

We had already made plans to be at Herndon when Plebe found out he will get leave 4 days between end of exams and Herndon- we cant fly him home and then fly us there for Herndon so he and buddies will road trip to where ever-

I will agree that being up front gets tiring and claustrophobic as the crowd behind you presses in-- and your view is blocked by the Mids who aren't climbing! Unless you need to sit, I advise moving around during the climb to get different perspectives.

Yep...found a quite grassy shaded spot near the Chapel.....sat down on the lawn with a cold drink and just watched it a distance. Didn't miss a thing.

FWIW, here's what I would do -- watch the Plebes line up and make the mad dash and first few minutes of chaos as lard goes flying, then head over to McGarvey's and sit in air conditioned comfort and enjoy a couple cold drafts. Somewhere around the 1+30 mark, head back over and by then the Plebes will have started to figure it out and make the last push. That's all the perspective you need:)

Great plan from Old Navy BGO. Other than participating in Herndon I hadn’t watched any years until 1/C year. We brought lawn chairs sat way in the back far away under a tree with coolers, snacks and drinkers. Was a nice day and weather. Saw it all great.

No kidding. Study day today and then finals. A little intersessional leave, and back for Sea Trials and Herndon.
19 days to Herndon. My Plebe is not nearly as worked up about these finals as the first semester finals. He is downright calm about it.

I guess they are finally into the groove, as it were.

Anyone going to have theirs home for intercessional leave (aka Mother’s Day)? I am blessed. 6 more days almost to the hour!! VERY excited.

Unfortunately No- because we are flying in for Herndon on the 18th, my plebe's leave starts the late on the 8th and has to be back the 12th- the only reasonable flight out was 6 am so to only have him home 3 days when we will be there 1 week later just wasn't in the budget

We are picking our Plebe and a Plebe buddy up on Tuesday after finals. We are looking forward to 5-6 days of double the stories before they go back for Sea Trials. The year went by quickly (for us parents - maybe no so much for the Plebes).

Good luck on your finals to all the Plebes (and upper class Midshipmen) this week and next!

Sea Trials are well underway now, and Herndon is a mere 6 days away.
