A good friend of my son is a college program NROTC ( nonscholarship) student at Purdue. He did quite well this year in school and was devastated a couple of days ago when he found out that NO 3 year or 2 year scholarships were awarded this year for NROTC. Has anyone heard anything regarding NROTC getting rid of these scholarships?

Everything I researched said that in-college NROTC cadets must talk to their PNS regarding in-college opportunities. It also stated that there is a scholarship available, that your friend can ask about:

Tweeddale Scholarship
Each unit Professor of Naval Science (PNS) is assigned two Tweeddale Scholarships each year
Program focused on students majoring in specific technical fields
Criteria for selection:
Student must have completed at least one but no more than four academic terms w/ a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) which places student above peer mean or 3.0, whichever is higher
Transcript must reflect grade of "C" or better in all courses attempted
Student must have completed one academic term of college level math or science
Will be required to complete Naval Science Course 101 as soon as possible
Students interviewed by PNS and must comply w/ standards regarding leadership potential and military/physical fitness
Submit a revised degree plan for review by PNS; degree plan must be verified by student's faculty advisor and demonstrate that student will by able to complete all naval science requirements and still graduate on time with his/her assigned class year group.
Major in: Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics
Strong math/science background in high school and "B" or better in calculus, if completed

3 Year Scholarships

Sinagaporemom, thanks for the response. I have heard of these scholarships and you are kind to mention them. This friend of my son is not a Engineer or technical major. With that said, the drastic cut in 3 year and 2 year scholarships for NROTC should be concerning. I hope this is just a one year setback for NROTC or there will be a profound decline in the size of NRTOC participation nationwide.

It could just be a situation in their unit...they might be full. Good Luck to your friend.

My daughter has just heard the same thing from a couple of her friends (includes kids in engineering and non-engineering fields) in her unit. Comments from the CO were that no scholarships were awarded this year to college programmers. She is in school in NY. This is devasting news in my opinion :frown:

This must be so frusrating for the college programmers who worked so hard for those scholarships. I know that that it is made clear that there are no guarantees, but it is still disheartening.

I am now very happy that my son decided to take the NROTC scholarship at his assigned unit rather than joining the unit at his 'dream school' as a college programmer with the hope of getting a 3 year scholarship. (The dream school unit had a very long wait list, so he couldn't transfer his scholarship).

S1732 Cogratulations to your son for receiving a 4 year scholarship. The competition was keen. I wish all College Programers well in the upcoming year and hope this was just a one year budgetary issue.

I always thought that after two years they automatically give you a scholarship. The mids doing NROTC for two years without pay deserve it.

I wish the best for all the college programers. During the spring semester I was awarded a 3.5 yr PNS scholarship as a political science major. So don't give up hope!

Edit:

PNS Leadership Scholarship
Eligibility: freshmen and sophomores enrolled as College Program midshipmen in NROTC in good academic standing (2.5 GPA); awarded locally by PNS.
Value: tuition, lab expenses, $375 per semester for textbook costs, uniforms, incidental academic expenses and $250/300/350/400 tax-free for freshmen/sophomores/juniors and seniors, respectively, each month of academic year

NROTC two year scholarship

My son received a two year NROTC scholarship this year and will transfer to USD in the fall from a JC in California. He is a Poly Science /Intl Relations major. They sent him and 25 others to NSI in Newport this summer. Good luck to your friend, not too many but they are out there.
