USMMA Prep Schools

what does your son think about his Marion experience? Does he feel it has prepared him well for the SA? And what was the application process? My son is looking at Marion as a possible plan B if he doesn't get into USMMA this year. I'm concern about we might not know until LAte April/May. Is that too late to apply for scholarships?

Don't go by the published number. Call admissions at Marion, there are a number of scholarships/Aid they can offer..
I agree... My DD got her TWE from USAFA, and checked out Marion Military Institute. We saw tuition would be over $20,000. She applied for their scholarships and we didn't hear back for some time. She stressed about her Plan B, somewhat nonexistent at the time. She was resigned to the fact that she couldn't afford to go, wondering what to do, when we found out at the 11th hour that her scholarship WAS approved for her, her first semester was covered. Life changed in an instant! Once at MMI on her first day to report, we were told that some of our own funds plus a further scholarship opportunity would cover her second semester as well. Her months at MMI have probably been some of the best of her life- hard work and GREAT friends -and she received appointments to both the Air Force and West Point. She will be reporting to USAFA end of June, where just nine months ago she literally did not know what to do. I have been very impressed with her progress there and the way the school is run. I recommend checking the SAP programs out and calling as soften as needed to get responses. I'm sure they're getting busier about now.

He told me last week he woukd not have traded his first year ar Marion for a direct appoinment out of high school. He made lifelong friends although many are in the class of 2022 at various SA's. He was waitlisted at 2 last year and fitmly believe he was just a spot or two away. He decided to return and has at least one appointment offer so far. Marion recognizes application weaknesses and teaches them to fix it. He raised his SAT score by 180 points.

DS' plebe year has been a breeze thanks to his year at MMI. He would not trade that year for anything and his "Marion Made" family is closer than ever.. Sounds corny but that year was PRICELESS..

My DS is also at Marion as a sponsored USMMA prep... it is an incredible school and will do very much for your DS or DD. I highly recommend it!

No, it wasn't a full scholarship. He had a couple of scholarships he earned as a senior that he applied to the school (maybe $5000 or $6000 total). He will end up paying about $3000 out of pocket for the year.

He didn't apply for any scholarships at NMMI. Frankly, he didn't want to do any more applications by that point of the year and it was a bit late for the scholarship deadline at the school. If he didn't have the other outside scholarships than he might have looked a little harder. He worked during the summer and earned most of what he needed to pay for school.

Just more kudos to MMI, DS received KP offer yesterday, waiting for one more before decision probably this coming week. The SAP program is designed to not only get that appointment but be prepared for the tough workload and a military bearing advantage.

My son as well is a sponsored prep at NMMI and had scholarships as well from his Senior year at HS. We had had to pay about the same 3000.00 BUT this does not include his flights. We are in PA so we had to fly him back and forth. That ran us another 3000.00 total.

Question- Is there a general scholarship amount for those that are offered prep school? We thought he was in- but it looks like prep school for him. Now we are trying to gather all the necessary info.

I would recommend calling the prep schools directly. They all have great relationships with Kings Point, and they can answer your specific questions because this year may differ from years past. You can also get a feel for each prep school that way and possibly narrow down your options. You may want to refer to the prep school thread below where you can find more information.

USMMA might have changed their process from previous years. My DS is a sponsored prep at NMMI this year. I don't believe USMMA allows the preps to choose their prep school. I think they are assigned from KP with the majority going to NMMI. Again, I could be mistaken and for self-prep students it won't matter since KP isn't paying the bill.

New@This is correct for sponsored preps. I was answering for self preps. I think all or nearly all sponsored USMMA prepsters go to NMMI.

Nearly all, my DS is at MMI as a sponsored USMMA prep and I believe there are about 3 other sponsored preps there.

Thanks for the info. What does your DS think of MMI? How many of the 4 there have been offered appointments so far?

We are very impressed with MMI and our son is benefiting so much from the experience. The academics, at least the classes he was assigned are very strong. It's confusing though because the USMMA assigned him to Physics, Chem, Calculus, English Lit, Military Science, SAT prep and PT which is quite a heavy load. But there are other USMMA preps that were assigned no Physics and Algebra instead of calc... much lighter loads? I'm not sure how this is fair and how they can compare these kids GPAs? His roommate is a sponsored USNA prep and he was not assigned to the higher level classes either... very strange?!

I think the classes assigned are at the request or in consultation with USMMA or USNA. They know what the deficiencies are, and, for sponsored prep, want to see a positive development in specific areas. Of course, I am not Mr. Admissions, so, everything i just typed may be total BS. :)

my son is going to self prep at either Marion or New mexico. Can anyone else share if there are benefits to one over the other?
