ROTC Scholarship offers

Hi Everyone,

I began to look at past posts concerning the ROTC scholarship. I read a post in which stated a student received 4 year ROTC offers from several different schools. It has caused me to ask the following questions. Do individual schools choose students for a scholarship? Or is the scholarship a national one in which colleges choose from students who are eligible based on the OML and more than one school can choose the same student? Or do individual Battalion choose students? Or is it all computer generated based on OML and offers are generated by a formula?

I hope this question isn't too confusing. Thanks to anyone who can answer.

The scholarships are awarded on the national level. Cadet Command and the Army awards the scholarships based on a national OML, they then assign schools to the scholarship award.

I know in the past the battalions will have a list of the applicants that have listed their school, they would then check a box indicating that they would like the applicant to attend their program if they are awarded a scholarship. The battalion however does not make the decision on whether the applicant receives a scholarship or which schools they are awarded. The battalion does have the option to award a battalion scholarship to cadets that don't receive a national scholarship if they have any battalion scholarships available, these are usually given out to cadets that have already started in the program.

One of the ROO's that post here may be able to give more detailed info.

This makes sense on how one student can get an offer from more than one school. I kind of figured it was how you stated because it is a national scholarship but I didn't realize a student could get several offers. Thanks for your help.

It's not so much that the student gets several offers - if the student is awarded a 3 or 4 year National Scholarship, they are given a list of 3 - 4 schools they can use the scholarship at - when they accept the scholarship the student indicates which of the listed schools they have chosen.

The above responses apply to Army ROTC. Navy ROTC has a different process. The applicant lists their 5 top choice schools in order. If a scholarship is awarded, it is placed at one of those 5 schools, generally the applicant's first choice, as long as there is room in the unit for the applicant. If for some reason the applicant wants to change the placement of the scholarship, they can apply to have the placement changed. I believe the same process applies to the Marine Option NROTC as well, although you can only apply for Navy or Marine, not both. No idea how Air Force placements work, but it sounds like the type of scholarship you are awarded and where you want to use it come into play.

And just to make sure everything is complete, there are not always offers to multiple schools. Sometimes there is only a single school assigned.

AFROTC is tied to the cadet and degree. DS was awarded a Type 2 for a technical degree and must apply it to a technical degree (from a list) to his school of choice (there are some restrictions on some scholarships.)
