Still waiting

Hi all, it’s getting late into March and less and less appointments are available to be given out by admissions. Is there anyone who might know how many appointments are left? I have a principal nomination from my congressman which I know is the “golden ticket” but I’m starting to lose hope this late in the appointment season. I’ve talked with one other person from my district and he hasn’t heard anything either.

Side note: I’m aware that around 10% of appointees self report on this forum, but I disagree that it’s a good way to keep track of how many appointments are left as a lot of people with LOAs may have reported but many other regular applicants have not, if that makes any sense. My application was done 10 November and on top of the principal nom I also have a presidential one. Any input is helpful!

Carm, are you medically and academically (scores within the posted range, high gpa) qualified? As a principal nomination you have to be found to meet the minimum qualifications to receive an appointment. Also, have you reached out to your MOC who gave you the principal nomination? They may be able to provide you with valuable information. It could also be that your district has not been processed yet. Either way, keep the faith, there is still a good bit of time left. Best of luck.

My son holds a principal nomination as well and there has been no news for him either. His application was due in the fall and the USAFA sought a medical waiver which was granted, giving him commission qualified status. Another applicant from our district received an appointment back in January. Waiting is difficult...hang in there!

Based on information drawn from the admissions website, this forum, my ALO and fellow applicants and appointees, I have come to the conclusion that I am competitive for an appointment.

I have emailed my ALO, but being that he is active duty and transitioning to a new post, communication with him has been minimal, and I understand that he has a lot going on at this time.

It was my impression that the congressman’s office was as unaware of when their districts appointments would be awarded as the applicants were, so I have not reached out to his office regarding the timeframe for hearing any news. Is the MOC made aware of when their district will hear back? If so I’ll shoot them an email tonight.

I know. I need to book about $4k worth of travel this summer and don’t know when/what to book. Very frustrating but glad to know I’m in good company

Is USAFA admissions working this week, or do they take a spring break when the cadets do?

Welcome to the military...there is a term that has been used frequently https://marineparents.com/marinecorps/sempergumby.asp and I am sure it would be applicable to all of the Academies.
After 25yrs of active duty living, I'm used to it. Doesn't make it any less frustrating though; esp when none of the travel is reimbursable :p

We reached out to ours, they were responsive but the only info they got on DS was in the MOC portal that said no decision had been made on DS yet . You could try that route can’t hurt !

Understood. Can you buy insurance for the travel if you need to change it?

Carm, the MOCs office usually has some contacts they can reach out to in Admissions. That might not necessarily provide them much more information than is already known, but I don't think it hurts to ask.

I think what makes part of SA admissions process so stressful is they don't have a specific release date. For example, I think the ivys release today ( I suspect a lot of SA kids are the same type ivys like ). You start getting nervous last night knowing one way or another it's over tonight. With SAs since no specific date (maybe 4/15, kind of), you are always wondering if it's your week, you hang on every bit of information you get. I guess it's just how it is with SAs but wow, is it stressful.

Look at it this way. If an appointment comes, the free college makes paying the premium for flights much less painful. So my recommendation is to wait before buying tickets.

100% agree with this. DS was waiting on Rice admission decision. He knew he would not hear until Tuesday. Tuesday was THE day. Not before and for sure ON Tuesday. I have to say that knowing the day was nice. And his portal updated at 5:01pm - exactly when the email said he would know. But we cannot really compare the emotions of waiting on that decision with the emotions he/we have waiting on the academies because Rice was not a clear top plan B. DS was likely to chose to attend Texas A&M and be in the corps on a NROTC scholarship over anything Rice had to offer short of a complete full ride. And even then he was not sure! Rice declined admission so its not a problem of having to chose now (read an article that they had record low acceptance rates this year). That's all ... for what its worth....

Just adding that when our DS first applied for the class of 2020, he didn’t get his TWE until mid-April.

Second year he was applying as a Self-Prep from MMI and again.....Mid-April (15th!) but this time....appointment!!
The first year was agonizing, but second year just as much bc we watched every wave come and go.

There’s still time, but I know it’s so difficult waiting, and seeing the acceptance list grow without your name is truly draining. If your DD or DS gets a TWE, it doesn’t need to be the end of their dream to attend the Academy. Our DS is now finishing his second year at USAFA, and it’s only bc someone on this forum reached out to us after the initial TWE. Hang on and hang in there!
