Does anyone know if we are allowed to bring our own iPad to Usma? If so are there only certain models they allow? My laptop broke and since I’ll be issued a laptop as a cadet, it wouldn’t be reasonable to purchase a new one, but buying an iPad that can be used would make sense.
 
You could bring one I suppose after plebe summer, but I'm pretty sure you would not be allowed to connect to the network, so it would be rather pointless (except for standalone stuff). Only authorized devices that they set up and maintain are allowed to connect to the net. At least it used to work that way.
 
After appointment you will be given options for IT gear....it will describe your options in detail.
 
I thought I read that you can buy internet service so that you can do personal stuff that isnt allowed through the normal in house network
 
I got a chance to sit in a couple of classes recently. Every cadet had his/her laptop open on their desk or table during class. I didn't see anyone with an IPAD.

I know they are allowed to have other devices as my son is trying to figure out how to get his PC to the academy....
 
DD is a plebe, we bought her a new IPAD for HS graduation. As described above, she paid for internet access (don't know if it is monthly etc) and can connect to the internet to use Netflix, Amazon etc. She cannot use it to do any sort of schoolwork, she has a school supplied laptop for that stuff. That network is protected.
She has had not issues with connectivity with her IPAD, though I doubt she has much time to use it.

Similar for DS. Bought him an iPad on A Day weekend. Had to be one of a short list of approved models and the USMA IT team had to do something to authorize it and now he can access internet/Netflix etc.
 
We purchased an iPad for our 2023 at Christmas when one was a deal we couldn't resist. Newest model. I am keeping it sealed until A Day. My 2021 watches movies etc on his and occasionally uses it for school work. He purchased his through USMA.

You mentioned your 2021 bought his through USMA....few questions:cool: 1) is it an iPad or some other tablet? 2) it is used only for entertainment? Or is it needed for any classes? 3) what does USMA charge for their's? Wondering if we should start paying attention to upcoming sales;) TIA!
 
I believe in previous classes it was part of the tech package...but now it appears it no longer is.
 
For the 2021 year it was separate. It is an iPad. He has used it sparingly for classes but enjoys it for personal use. I remember the cost being comparable to typical stores as in no mark up. A perk is that the iPad is ready for use after A Day as opposed to turning it in to be set up. Not a huge deal but a consideration.
