Will it help my waitlist chances if I notify the college that I received AROTC scholarship?

I was notified that I won a 4-year scholarship today to my dream college, but I was also waitlisted today for said college. Will it increase my chances of getting off the waitlist if I tell undergrad admissions and their ROTC cadre about it? Would it hurt?

Let them know...that question was posed this past weekend at VT and the answer was a resounding YES. They will certainly consider 4 years of "predictable income" in their admissions decision. MAY tip the scale (all things being equal).

... and it's not just predictable income, it's a full tuition kind of predictable income.

There are many past threads on this topic.
The consensus is:
  • It might be beneficial to notify admissions that you have a full tuition AROTC scholarship. (as @kinnem implies, full retail > discounted tuition)
  • Letting the ROO know can possibly help from the inside.
  • Neither of the above actions are likely to hurt and could potentially help.

Agree with AROTC-dad--especially with getting help from the ROTC for admissions. When I was a PMS, I would sit down with the Admissions Director and I would push for admissions for candidates who had scholarships. Some ROTC programs, however, have no pull with admissions (Georgetown is an example).

I agree with all of the above. At the same time, prepare to implement your Plan B, particularly if it involves transferring the scholarship to a school that has accepted you.

+1 to all the above comments.

The PMS at the UW told my son that he had a great relationship with admissions and that he would advocate in person for admission, he said he was almost always successful. As stated not all programs have that same relationship but always worth asking.........of course you could always have Aunt Becky make a few phone calls, Sorry, couldn't resist.

Congratulations!
My DS is in the same position. He notified the AFROTC detachment at VT and they pretty much told him to follow through with Plan B, so he’s paid his reservation fee at VMI (originally 1st choice but kept changing his mind)

All advice above is on point. My daughter was put on the wait list for one of her schools a few years ago. It was specifically for the nursing program, after receiving the AROTC 3 year AD scholarship for nursing, the ROO contacted the Dean of Nursing, and my DD contacted admissions on the same day. Later that afternoon she received an email welcoming her to the University and the school of nursing, and stated she would soon receive an official letter but it also stated that they wanted to let her know ASAP since the admissions department recognized that she had a deadline for her AROTC scholarship. So it seems it had an impact. I would think for the very highly selective schools it might not matter, but for my DD’s “more selective” school, it seems like it helped. BTW, that is the school she chose and will graduate from next May.
