My DD has been accepted to the academy for class of 2023...unfortunately she has yet to get her Drivers license and we are unsure if she will get in time before June 27th. We have heard conflicting reports that she must have one and others have told us she doesn’t need one. Can anyone please confirm? Thank you!

Checked with my DS and he indicated it is not absolutely required. However, since doolies will need to borrow cars from upperclassmen whenever they want to get off of campus, having a DL would be handy (but her USAFA family will help her get places if she does not have one).

In regards to I-Day and judging by the appointee handbook, a DL would be useful but there are alternative proofs of identification that are necessary for June 27th.

can you get a ID that is the same as a license minus the DL designation? I would think a proper ID is more the issue than actual driving ability. After all many city kids do not drive. Passport or REAL ID is what I think you would be striving for.

Appointees should carefully review the Form O-100 that will be posted in their portals. The sample in the Appointee Booklet indicates the following should be hand-carried on I-Day: Social Security Card, Photo ID (Driver's License, State-issued ID, or Federal Government-Issued ID), and Proof of US Citizenship.

IMHO, if DD does not have the time to get her DL before I-Day, it would probably be a good idea to secure a state-issued ID.

If under 18, go to local post office with both parents, school ID, and birth certificate and get a passport card. Costs $45, takes about 3 weeks to get it and is official for travel in North America and verification of US citizenship for employment.

If I’ve heard correctly, drivers license is only required for Army or Marines, where there’s real possibility of operating a motorized land vehicle, i.e. tanks and such. For Air Force and Navy, where motorized vehicles are in the air and sea, respectively, drivers license is not necessary.

My son is a 2018 grad. He didn't get his driver's license until his third year at USAFA. He did have a dependent military id and used that for his official id when reporting in.
He was always able to catch rides with others when needed.

Will a temporary permit count as a valid photo ID? I'm in the same boat, temps no license.

My son got his DL just a week or so before he left (we didn't let them drive till they were 18. Twins, wanted them to spend their money on something important, like COLLEGE.). There's still time! Will your child be flying to CoS for I-Day?
