My DD and husband are heading out in April. Coming from MA via flight through Denver. They are renting a car and I am not sure what the best hotels in the area are? Should they stay close to the downtown area? or closer to the academy?
When my DD visited USNA she fell in love with the downtown area of Annapolis. The Midshipman walking around in uniform had a lasting impression. I am not sure if that is the case for USAFA but I want to ensure they stay somewhere recommended. Any assistance is appreciated!

Embassy Suites on Woodman Road is nice too....A little bit farther from the Academy but there are a couple restaurants right within walking distance as well…

Any of the hotels on Woodman Rd just off I-25 are nice. That is one exit south of the South Gate. There are some decent ones near North Gate but you’re farther from downtown. Also, don’t expect to see cadets walking downtown. It’s 8 miles from the cadet area to town and they won’t be walking there.

There are several mid-level hotels within a 10-minute drive of the main gate. But as noted above, not particularly close to downtown Colo Springs. But they do tend to be newer and nicer than what you mind find in town.

As noted above, it’s nothing like Annapolis. Not the same kind of town-academy synergy. Nor is Colo Springs anywhere near as charming as Annapolis. But there are some good things to do and places to visit in the area.

Thank you. That’s kind of what I was wondering. I will book them closer to the academy. Seems like so much more to explore in Colorado too! I’m very excited she has accepted her appointment!

I have stayed in the Academy Hotel on multiple occasions, and it really has a nice vibe. The breakfast is great (omelets made to order, waffles, etc.), the lobby is beautiful, and it is close to the Academy like @pooled18 said. They have their own restaurant as well, and you receive a discount there if you are staying at the hotel(forget exactly what the amount was, but it was fairly significant). I believe they still have a gym with a small weight room as well. Would highly recommend.

Just returned a week or so ago from the Springs for Junior Day at the Academy and stayed at the Residence Inn less than a mile from USAFA. Good rate and very clean place. Less than 5 minutes to the North Gate and if you are on the mountain view side you can see some of the campus buildings. If (and hopefully when) we go back we will stay there again. Hope Appointee visit goes great and that we are doing that at some point!

We are staying at the La Quinta, it's across the street (not sure it's GREAT) and it has free breakfast. I figured I can stand anywhere for a couple nights!

Congratulations on the appointment! It is such an exciting time for your DD and family. I can vividly remember the appointee tour with DS so I can relate to your excitement.

I can recommend the Hampton Inn Colorado Springs Central or Embassy Suites on Commerce Center Drive. The great thing about these two locations is that you walk across the parking lot to Old Chicago Pizza, one of my favorite places to eat in the Springs! The Quality Inn & Suites Garden of the Gods location is also a good place to stay. It isn't as nice as other hotels but the price is right. Plus, if you request a room on the mountain side you will have a great view of Pike's Peak.

I know it has already been mentioned but don't expect to see cadets walking around town in uniform. USAFA is essentially by itself, away from downtown COS. With the exception of pre-Recognition Doolies, cadets are usually in civilian clothes when off campus.

My advice? Stay anywhere but the Academy Hotel. Really not worth it and not affiliated with the Academy.

We stayed at Hyatt House when we visited last year for SS.
It had free breakfast and a kitchen so we could make something ourselves if we wanted to. The staff were great. It is a few exits away but you need a car to get everywhere in Colorado Springs.

Staying at the Academy Hotel in June. Heard mixed reviews but it is only for a few nights.

We live in Colorado Springs and I'd recommend the Drury Inn. Newer hotel and 5 minutes from the North Gate of USAFA.
