DS put on wait list

Not that I have very much knowledge of how this works, but if you look at the class portrait for the class of 2022 (found here: https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/_files/documents/ClassPortrait.pdf ) there was 1,373 offer of appointment given out and it seems that only 1,209 showed up for I-day. Other senior forums members could probably comment on this more, but there is still a chance however slim that might be. Either way, I'm sure your DS will make the right choice, just getting into an academy is an amazing feat. Good luck.

As was our son. He has an appointment to West Point he is now accepting. Just so others can see where they may measure up, he had a 33 composite on his ACT, multi-sport captain (Soccer and Lacrosse), 4.2 gpa, numerous volunteering and other service leadership positions. Attended Summer Seminar, CVW, was given a medical waiver etc etc etc. Disappointed yes, but happy to have an answer and move on to plan A2. He could have gone either way. Both academies met positives and negatives that would meet his strenth and weaknesses.

My DS also was placed on the Wait List! We will continue to wait though he is prepared and excited about Plan B. Good luck all! It’s been quite a journey!

Can you tell me did your portal change? DS just checked and is still CPR.
He received an email. Thought that it would tell him to check his portal but it actually explained in the email that he had been waitlisted. He has not looked at his portal yet.

Same for us.

Yes, the portal now shows waitlisted.

The email said they wait until all offered appointments have said yes or no before looking at waitlisted applicants. Said it would be mid-May before they notified waitlisted candidates of possible spots. Kinda tough when other options have May 1 deadlines, too. Oh well. He’s accepting the West Point offer.

Thanks to all here for the info and encouragement throughout the process.

That's not quite the way it works. USNA has already calculated the yield (percentage of candidates admitted who actually accept) so they know that X will decline those appointments and X will accept them and for the most part, they get it right every year.

So how many do they put on waitlist every year? And how many come off and actually get an Appt?

Unknown.
Unknown.
Probably varies year to year, depending on the target range for class size and when they feel they are “done.”

Not too helpful, sorry. No crystal balls, no way of knowing previous years’ numbers.

Is it possible for candidates who are still CPR to get an appointment, or does the academy typically not give appointments after they start waitlisting people?

This is our question as well. Would it be better to be waitlisted or CPR at this point?

It is very difficult to say. CPR can mean a lot of things.

It could mean that you are 3Q with a nomination and perfect for an Offer of Appointment (along with several hundred - maybe as many as 1,000 - of your peers).
It could mean that a few hundred of those above will be going to the wait list, and you're not one of them. That could be a good thing.
It could mean that a few hundred of those above will be going to the wait list, and you're one of them. That would be a good thing, but not nearly as good.
It could mean that they are waiting until April 15th to send your TWE. That would be a Plan B thing.

There is a chance until you get told of your status one way or another. Usually the wait list letter says how many (in the past was 100) and to continue with plan B.
