Im currently still waiting on a response whether it’s an acceptance (hopefully) or if I get declined. If I get declined am I still in the running for prep academy, or that does that mean I am no longer going in the running for an FF scholarship or a prep academy spot.?

Your application gets pushed to the next category if it doesn’t get picked up in previous offers of appointment slates. If you don’t get into USAFA they don’t tell you you’re denied and then re-notify you of an offer to FF or Prep School, you simply won’t hear back until you either get denied from all offers altogether or accepted to one of three options (admission, FF, Prep School). If you get a notification saying you were denied, you’ve been denied from everything. If you don’t hear back, you’re still in the running for all three options.

Is there a cutoff date as to when you hear back from any of the three options?

Well they can’t accept anybody after the incoming class has started on I think June 29th? If you call that a hard cutoff date then that’s one for you. At this point in the game one has to realize that this entire process is out of one’s hands, and now it requires complete focus on the path you would take if USAFA never existed. Now that all your stuff is in I would go full steam ahead with Plan B, to the degree that full steam ahead means for your Plan B college plan, and don’t wait for the Academy.

I will add that those of us (including me) who are still waiting to hear back this late in the game, the reality of not getting in this cycle year should be peeking its head up. Don’t be discouraged, but just know it’s there and it’s not uncommon to try try again. My uncle was a test pilot for F-16s and told me it’s not uncommon to see people apply for test pilot slots 4 if not more years in a row. Maybe use that as comfort that failure the first time around isn’t failure absolutely. Hurry up and wait and if you fail try try again, that’s all it takes.

Actually, if you read posts from previous years there have been a number of reports from candidates receiving a TWE (denial) and then later receiving offers for Prep, Falcon, and even in some cases an appointment!

AND, as they always say, there are MANY ways to commission as an officer. Last year when my son got his TWE I was crestfallen- how could they NOT see how GREAT my kid is?! But, in retrospect, the year he had to self-prep was the biggest blessing ever. He would have been so stressed with the new college experience AND the newness of military life, things would have been markedly harder for him. Now that he has had a year at MMI, he has a slightly better understanding of how military life goes and the rigors of an Academy education- this is NOT anything like a regular civilian education, in great ways and hard.

If you get your TWE, don't give up. Work harder, be better, show persistence- that is one of the biggest things they are looking for in future leaders for our military. And, not to sound totally trite: AIM HIGH!
