USAFA Class of 2023 Appointment Thread

To patriot23, rejection is tough especially when it's to someone you love. Consider the big picture, look at how accomplished your son is and what kind of character this hard work has developed. You should be proud and hopeful for the future. With those kind of grades and resume he should get options and scholarships to some fine schools. I believe in a higher power, what if there is a woman at that Plan B school who your son is supposed to meet, marry and give you grandchildren? Think of the joy and blessings whatever path he goes which will be bigger and better. It's ok to mourn in the rejection but keep it private and then focus on the future. Let this go and move on so you can celebrate the victories and path he goes down.

DS was told he did NOT get an appointment. Very Grueling and worthless 2 years. The entire process is clouded in secrecy. It lacks clarity and transparency. The process does not choose the most qualified (its just a fact), however it seems to favor states, districts, ethnicity, and gender. Shameful!

these are not worthy of an appointment? I say shame on USAFA and its phony processes!

During 2 years in the Portal. Never had a single face to face meeting with an ALO! Navy and USMA came to meet him 2 or 3 times each, he wanted USAFA, and didnt end up with a nomination to USNA or USMA

I feel bad for you and your son, p_23...seems like he did everything possible (and them some) to earn a place at the USAFA. I can certainly understand your frustration. Nobody knows why these decisions go these ways sometimes. I'll personally be pulling for your son to do great things wherever he ends up.

What a contrast in reading the past several posts. Everything from consistent perseverance three years running, to complete frustration, bitterness, and everything in between. For everyone here still waiting on a notification of any kind; I feel great honor and pride just knowing that my DD is still a candidate this late in the game. Considering the academy has an average of some 7000 applicants every year, along with the fact that some, if not many, TWE have already been sent, this says volumes as to everyone's ultimate potential who are still waiting. I honestly believe great things await every candidate regardless of outcome. Just to make it this far in the process is an accomplishment within itself. Yes it is discouraging to see all the appointments and yet still be waiting for an answer. That said, my DD is taking it in stride and already has a solid plan B college and ROTC moving forward. To everyone who has already been accepted for appointment, I share in your joy with congratulations, and a sincere thank you for your dedication to serve and protect our great country.

Well said! And still not losing hope but will embrace the outcome and try again. Persistence will prevail in everything!

Very tough to read something like this. With all due respect, this was totally unnecessary to include on a forum such as this one. This message should be relayed to your son's admission counselor or anyone from the academy admissions if you truly feel this way on the situation.

Based solely on statistics alone, I see no reason why your son should not be appointed by now. It is most definitely heart shattering after rejection from a service academy, no matter the amount. But, no matter what happened while his application was reviewed, all I can say for sure is your son has much potential. Whether he uses it to apply again or move onto something else and thrive is totally up to him but this failure is simply not the end all, be all. Life goes on, s*** happens, you just have to see what he can continue to improve on. With his determination to push through failure, he will be a great officer one day. I wish you, your son, and everyone still waiting on a decision the very best of luck and congratulations to those who have already received an offer of any sort from USAFA!

Dissing USAFA isn’t going to get your son there. He has amazing stats and must be an amazing person with incredible perseverance.
Rather than throw a fit on a thread designed to congratulate those who did make it in and plan to serve their country, take this time to remind your son how proud you are of him and all his work he has put in. I’m positive with his stats, determination, and supportive parent, he is going to achieve great things wherever he goes.
Congratulations to all of you who have received your merited appointments.
And to those who have been denied, you all are amazing for getting this far. Do not give up.

Patriot
I am sorry for your DS. I know it has been grueling, for him as for 10,000 other applicants.
I suspect, though, that the process will ONLY be WORTHLESS if he permits himself to think that (and what his folks think will impact that).
His scores are nearly a complete match with my DS, so you're right that his tangibles were "worthy". Like his ALO told my DS each of the times they met (which DS asked for), "Please know from the outset that it is a crapshoot. The Academy turns down even more qualified candidates each year than they can accept."
Your DS was, unfortunately, one of well over 1000 young men and women who were qualified and capable and willing and ready, and who didn't get their shot.
I wish him the best. I hope he'll find a way to rebound. I don't know if he happens to know the Lord or not, but if he does, Romans 8:28-29 is crucial.

these are not worthy of an appointment? I say shame on USAFA and its phony processes!

During 2 years in the Portal. Never had a single face to face meeting with an ALO! Navy and USMA came to meet him 2 or 3 times each, he wanted USAFA, and didnt end up with a nomination to USNA or USMA
Might not seem like it now, but your DS will be better and stronger from this journey. In the military we are faced with the question, die fighting or die retreating. Your kid was fighting! Can’t control the outcome, but you can control the effort. Should be proud.

Got a call last Wednesday from my congressman's secretary telling me that I got an appointment but I'm still waiting for a portal update. Anyone know roughly when I can expect it to change?

I’m in the same boat as you, got a call from my congressman last Wednesday, he said the update should happen within a week, but I’m still waiting over here, don’t feel alone in this state of limbo.

DS was told he did NOT get an appointment. Very Grueling and worthless 2 years. The entire process is clouded in secrecy. It lacks clarity and transparency. The process does not choose the most qualified (its just a fact), however it seems to favor states, districts, ethnicity, and gender. Shameful!
For those who question my DS resume i will net it out for you

Patriot23, I am very sorry to hear that your DS did not get in the academy. He sounds like he is very qualified and he is a worthy candidate. I hope his attitude is gratitude towards the process. My had is ex enlisted military and says there is alot of ups/downs. He has always told me to be grateful towards these opportunities and there are always doors open towards my goals, especially when some get closed. ROTC is another route your DS can take and reapply to the academy with his stats.

I hope all the success and brightest future for him. Keep fighting and pushing forward.

Still waiting for Concorde to update my DS's medical in the system. They said it could take up to 2 weeks or more before the Academy processes and updates the portal. That makes me nervous knowing appointee tours are in progress. Also discouraged reading Patriot23's post. My DS's scores are no where near that high! What he has going for him is his mile time, which is ranked 3rd in our state (3A). Being a top recruit doesn't mean you get offered a lot of money, especially in track. That's why we're looking at AF again. We had sort of moved on, but these scholarship offers are extremely low. VMI would not be possible without ROTC, and that doesn't include room and board.

Those are some amazing stats for sure. I know the feelings you are experiencing all too well. I disagree with many that say to vent on this forum is bad. I actually think it shows the real deal, and quite frankly I know what you are feeling, pain, anger, disappointment. One of the first instincts for a parent is to want to fight for their offspring. I say wear the anger on your sleeve and vent it out, I know I did, and it felt great. I got banned for six months, and you know what that was fine, and probably a good thing. Much better than keeping it bottled up. I know this will probably annoy some on the forum, but in my opinion, I think you are correct about the secrecy issue. Some general stats for districts could be shared to the public, with no detriment to the overall mission. A little more transparency of the process is probably not a bad thing.

It is a beautiful sunny morning here in IL and my DD is still waiting for an answer. This whole process has truly been a roller coaster of emotions for our whole family...from hope to despair to frustration and then back to hope. But I've come to realize that I am blessed beyond measure because I have an amazing daughter regardless of whether she gets an appointment or not. She is beautiful, smart, tough, driven, a born leader, and always sticks up for the little guy. She is also her own worst critic but is not afraid to admit it when she needs help. She feels honored to be counted among the remaining candidates who are still waiting. The USAFA has been her dream since 8th grade, she has done all she can to make the dream a reality and I couldn't be more proud of the young woman she has become. We have put it in God's hands...He is the master planner. I'm just excited to see what her future holds because appointment or not it will be AMAZING!! Congratulations to all who have received appointments and to those still waiting, good luck!!

I agree with you! Through the process I realize that my DS is not the best and the brightest, but he is determined to complete the task he has begun with integrity and to encourage others along the way. If admitted, he will serve with humility, knowing he doesn't "deserve " to be there but is being given an incredible opportunity. If turned down, he will seek God's direction for his life. He will thrive wherever he goes. We are proud of him no matter what.
Congrats to those who have been accepted and those who will complete the class. I am grateful that so many amazing young people are eager to serve.

Honest question: what is meant by ‘more transparency’? I have heard this before but don’t know what it actually means in regards to a service academy appointment. Don’t we know general statistics (ie how many an MOC can have appointed)?

.
Transparency meaning "Full Disclosure" on how the Admissions process works …. #'s in every category …. Formulas …. Metrics.
.
Admissions … theirs' is a Hard Heart-Wrenching Job. It is not my job, thank goodness ….
