Can some share with us details on NROTC uniforms and costs? What does the Navy provide, what are we responsible for. Shoes, PT gear, dress uniforms, etc?

DS's unit provided him with everything except running shoes and shoes. They provided BDUs, summer whites, PT clothing, and Navy Dress uniform. BDUs and PT clothing varied by service (Navy vs Marine). Whites and Dress uniforms worn by all midshipmen are Navy. You have to earn that EGA and commission to wear a Marine Dress uniform. They'll contact your DS over the summer and let him know what to bring. They may also ask for measurements so they can have the proper uniform sizes.

When you commission Navy Options get to keep their uniforms. Marines have to buy their uniforms after commissioning, which are rather expensive

EDIT: I think they'll be issuing uniforms at Indoc this year.

My DD is a 4C Navy option this past fall. They were given khakis and NWUS at orientation, as well as required foot gear and socks etc. and PT clothing. They did have to bring running shoes, appropriate black swimsuit, and their own athletic socks. They got dress blues in the mid-fall and got their dress whites a few weeks ago. They also got all of the required coats/jackets/outerwear (I believe they turned the winter coats back in). There was an extensive sizing/measurement form in the pre-orientation paper work they had to submit.

We’ve encouraged DS to purchase an additional dress shirt to make his life less stressful, but not sure if he has. He’s likely to die with the first dollar he ever earned. I suggest waiting to see/hear if your MDN needs additional gear. We’ve purchased a few shirt garters (or whatever they’re called) along the way (they get lost), but really I just keep an eye on the state of his running shoes. Navy’s taken care of the uniforms and tailoring.

DS will likely get a list of what he needs to bring from his unit. I believe it was the running shoes, black or navy blue swim trunks, black socks and white undershirts. And in the spring, he will be needing some white underwear when they get their summer whites, or he may have an embarrassing moment when he realizes they do not hide what is worn underneath. My tip would be to spend a couple extra bucks and get good undershirts and socks. As a police officer, I have tried many brands over the years and I am partial to the 5.11 line. The shirt necks don't wrinkle or stretch and the socks stay up. He will also likely want a plain black backpack for uniform days. He won't be able to wear anything but plain black in uniform and it will have to be worn over both shoulders. Again, I'm sure he will be getting all this from his unit soon.

You could help your DS a lot by teaching him to iron if he doesn’t know already. They will show them details of things like the military press, but my DD had a big learning curve on the actual skill of ironing. I got her an iron and ironing pad to use at school.

DS was taught to iron by me (Dad) who learned at the tender age of 9 prior to permanent press. He kept his uniforms spiffy and also earned some extra bucks, while not on scholarship, by taking in ironing from his dorm mates.

DS swore by those (whatever they're called) and still does. I'm pretty sure that was an out of pocket cost for him.

yes it is sort of funny. My son does a better job of ironing then my wife who has been doing it for year

NROTC provides all uniforms. However my DS had to buy extra shirt ties, etc...because they got misplaced. He also had to buy special shoes used for color guard only. Midshipmen keep the uniforms they are provided by NROTC - pt gear, SDBs, khaki's, whites, NWUs, etc....As a senior prior to graduation, a company usually comes in and provides an opportunity order additional uniforms...usually a package....they offer a payment plan. It is expensive. Honestly, I'm not certain if the unit provided or if we bought his commissioning uniform.

As for the ironing....I did show my sons how to iron...I think they could do it if necessary....but my youngest DS decided no need to iron when the campus laundry and tailor are right next to your dorm...he just takes whites, SDBs or khaki's over to be pressed when needed....the luxury of proximity.
