Girls State in different state?

Hello!
I was accepted into SLE Session 2 for this summer, and while I'm thrilled to be going it means that I won't be able to participate in my state's girls state. However, the girls state program of one of my neighboring states is a week before, so I could theoretically attend there. I wasn't able to find any information on their (the other state's girls state) website that said that applicants had to live in-state, but their also wasn't anything saying that non-residents could apply. Do any of you have any experience with this?
Thank you!

(If it matters, the state that I'd be applying to is Kansas.)

Have you asked USMA to change your SLE timing to accommodate Girls State. I’m guessing they’d be willing to accommodate that type of request. That seems like a much easier path than sling out-of-state gymnastics with Girls State.

You're probably right, and that would make more sense. I can't do Session 1 because the trip out east is also to see family who aren't around until mid-June; while that would be ideal from an applicant perspective it won't work out logistically & financially (I've talked to my parents about it). Thank you for the advice, though; I'll probably reach out to my Liaison Officer and see what he thinks about it.

Going to a different state's Boys/Girls State pretty much obliterates a major part of what the program is about. Each state has differences in how they are set up with regard to city/town/county/state politics and the individual programs are set up to teach SPECIFICALLY to that state. As a BGO, I certainly get the importance of these programs to an
academy application but it is not the golden ticket either. I believe in the Boys State program and am now a staffer at the one that I (and one of my sons) attended. I would
not spend my effort if I didn't think it was worthwhile but it is not so critical that attended out of state is necessary.

Okay, thank you! I hadn't considered how different the programs might be, but your response was eye-opening. I'll focus on developing leadership closer to home; it's disappointing to miss out on Girls State, which sounds like a fantastic opportunity, but I think you're right that it's not worth going around the state establishments. Thank you!

I had a similar issue myself. My field force representative told me to choose Girls state of SLE due to the admissions format. She told me that while SLE is an amazing experience and beneficial, it does not count for any points on your USMA admissions. Girls state is worth 200 points on your admissions (no idea how exactly these are weighted, but I know the number is 200 according to my field force rep). Best of luck!

Just speaking from experience here, when I had boys state and USNA Summer seminar at the same time, all it took was a call to the admissions office and an email to have the problem fixed. As I’m sure that’s not the case for everyone, I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to ask. If they are unable to accommodate, I would ask admissions what would be more beneficial to your application. They want you to succeed and it looks great that you were showing the capacity to balance your choices. Good luck!

@FreshSquid23 the same thing happened to me this year. USNA was very helpful in getting my NASS session switched because of the timing of boys state. I would also add that I have talked to many SA admissions officers about this specific conflict (I was accepted into USAFA SS, NASS, WPSLE and have Texas Boys State the second week in June) and they ALL agreed that boys/girls state is 100 percent the event to attend if it conflicts with a SS. As was already mentioned, the admissions officers brought up that attending boys/girls state gives you a HUGE amount of points on your application, whereas summer programs do not. Therefore, I had to decline WPSLE and will attend boys state this summer instead. Hope this helps.

Good luck on your app! Both you you!

Thanks! Hopefully I could have the same problem you do @FreshSquid23 in choosing between USAFA and USNA. Congratulations on your appointment to both.

I’m nothing special! I took the SAT/ACT a combined total of about 6 times and chose to work my butt off! I didn’t have a “perfect” gpa and I wasn’t the captain of my sports teams but I did make an impact in every way that I could control! It’s easy to be complacent but you have to keep going and push yourself out of your comfort zone! If I can do it, it’s a testament that anyone willing to work hard can. My results are the exception and I’m completely blessed!

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice! I emailed the coordinator of Kansas Girls State and was able to gain admittance for their program, I just won't be able to run for Governor or move on to Nation. I'm really fortunate that it ends up working out for me to do both, as it seems like Girls State is an important factor in calculating the leadership portion of the WCS.
Also, @FreshSquid23 , that's sounds like great advice! I'm not the captain of my sports teams either, and I was kind of worried about it; it seems like hard work between now and next year may still give me a chance :) Congratulations on your appointments!
