Plebe Parents Weekend

AH! Five dark thirty. Made the walk down for that one but the weather was nice at that time of the morning.

Plus off site parking is available and FREE (uNtil 10:00) at that hour!

“All the plebes” haha that’s great. And true! And the beautiful sunrise [emoji560] over the water while they work. It’s such a surreal experience.

I've read this thread over but I am still unclear on if I will report back to and sleep at USNA each night of Plebe Parents Weekend?

If last year’s practice holds, you’ll have to return to Mother B every night. But things can and do change. So you’ll know more when next plebe summer rolls around.

We made a week out of it (Monday to Monday). We had a blast.
Our DS had Rowing during Plebe Summer. Since we knew the time of day he would be rowing, on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. THP implored me to hang out with her on the sea wall, knowing that they would run over the bridge toward Mother B. ;)

He said "Hi Mom" and "I can't stop and you can't hug me!" to her, so she just cheered him on as he ran by.
My DD is a rower as well. I didnt think they did their sport during Plebe summer but seems I am wrong? Is it just the one day per week during Plebe summer? (Vs every day during academic year)

Plebe summer sports can vary from 5-6 days/week to 2-3. It depends on their company schedule, their watch schedule, and the Plebe summer schedule. Usually it’s close to 5 days/week.

Hello All!

This is my first post, although I've been following for months. I am trying to make arrangements for PPW2019. I have read the various threads and there seems to be differing opinions regarding where to stay, ie. within walking distance or away. I have tentative reservations at a VRBO within walking distance of gate 1 (and gate 3, but farther) and at a beach house about 10mins away.

I am hoping to hear from someone with recent PPW experience. Many say it is a nightmare trying to get plebes back to the yard each night, but I've heard from others that it is fine. I think DD would appreciate the serenity of the beach house for the few hours she's there. Also wondering if they use gate 1 or 3 to enter upon returning each night.

Appreciate any input!

If you can afford whatever the steep cost is of staying within walking distance of USNA, then that will save a lot of hassle.
Otherwise, it can be quite a nightmare dropping them off if you cut it close. If you plan to have them back an hour before they need to report, they will be fine. Trust me, they will be extremely antsy to get back way before their report time, anyway. Nobody wants to be the Plebe who isn't in their Company Area at the appointed time.

We always stay out by the Mall, so it is a very short drive down West Street to get to Downtown Annapolis ("DTA"). If you can deliver them to DTA in the Ego Alley area (where the boats are), they have a 3-minute walk to the Barry Gate. Anywhere in DTA is a pretty short walk to either of the pedestrian entrances.

I will share our experience PPW last summer. Beach house. Brought our family (we are 6) and rented about a 15 min drive over the bridge. We never had a single problem with parking to pick up (we used the stadium shuttle and HIGHLY recommend. Security is done there at the stadium and you are driven directly onto the yard. Air conditioned super cool USNA busses. And only 5$....a steal!). Also never had any issue with dropping off. We did shoot for about an hour early. Which our plebe would have wanted to do no matter what to get back in and settled. We simply drove along King street (is that the name?), with all the other families, and did a stop at gate one and hugged and off he went (same with other families). Sort of like school drop off.

I would recommend this and do it again in a heartbeat, if your plebe is one who likes to get away. If they want to be in the bustle of DTA Annapolis, then in town would probably be better. Although if they prefer the action and seeing people normally, it may be different PPW.

I’ve not read of anyone disappointed in getting away a bit. We simply had NO issues with traveling, as long as you plan for it. Family time together in the car is still family time together. It just wasn’t an issue for us at all.

Thank you! We were lucky to find homes not much more than what it would cost us for two hotel rooms, but we get more space and a kitchen.

And generally it’s gate 1, as the late night report back times we had required that. Gate 3 would be closed then.

PM if you would like. I’d be happy to opine on location, etc. and share ours.

You can’t go wrong with either location. Let your P2B pick, and plan transit times accordingly.

Do you have a military ID? Gate 8 is the 24-hour gate, and you can avoid the DTA (Downtown Annapolis) carjams on the roundabouts and one-way roads. Slip in Gate 8, go a few blocks, and Bancroft is right there. USNA is very compact.
