My DS will be a Plebe this summer. Can anyone shed light on how the academy selects and builds out the 30 companies? Is it purely random or do they seek balance across a set of attributes, or deliberately make some co's stronger than others (again based on some set of attributes)? And anyone know when the incoming Plebes will be notified of their company number?

Not sure exactly on how it all works, algorithmn probably. The goal is to have a balance of NAPS, priors and directs is what I have seen over the years. Also try to balance females out across the 30 companies. Usually end up with 4-6 NAPS, 1-2 priors and the rest are either foundation, directs or college admits. These are just estimates based upon watching it over the years and the usual class make up. Priors can vary from several years of fleet experience to having finished boot camp and part of nuke school. NAPSters stand out during Plebe Summer. The playing field all evens out around 6 weeks into the academic year. Company assignments... not sure on dates, probably anytime from late May to mid-June.

I got notified of my company number and platoon this past summer a week before I-Day. Keep in mind that your platoon number will be your company number during the academic year. During plebe summer the plebes from 2 companies join and do plebe summer together as a single company. For example, if someone was notified right before plebe summer that they were in India-17 they would be in India Company during plebe summer and 17th company during the academic year.
I don't know exactly how the companies are assigned but based on my observations it seems pretty random. Every company will inevitably have a diverse group of people from all over the country.

I think they also try to achieve diversity in terms of varsity athletes, geography, etc. It's a melting pot.

as my plebe looks to the end of his plebe year , i will say this the 3 roommates he had during plebe summer are still 3 of his closest company mates- something to be said for going through the trenches together. All 3 from different states and backgrounds

from my son's observations, evenly spread boys/girls and states, everything else is left to chance

Our 17 had the same roommate from day 1 Plebe summer until they graduated. As close as brothers. Our 20 will likely be the same. Very close friends despite a fist fight Plebe year. But that's boys for you. It was over and forgotten minutes later. Typical that if you mess with one, you get both.

I've never seen circles of friends as close as those at the Academy. They don't play games. They never stay mad. They watch out for each other constantly. They don't think for a second before they jump to an other's defense - don't ask details on that.

A firstie was 20 seconds short three days before the last PRT. His company planned it like a military exercise. Pacers, sprinters, and more. They ran and yelled and screamed and would not let him fail. They tortured him on that run willing him to make it. When he made it by 3 seconds, it was total pandemonium. Someone should have gotten hurt in that dog pile. Their dedication to his success was amazing.

Agree with what’s been said here. Companies are built to have a mix of backgrounds. Additionally, siblings or cousins will never be in the same company.

We actually had a set of brothers in my company. One was a 3/c (we got shot gunned after Plebe Year) and he was a 1/C. Never in the same chain of command and lived on opposite ends of the company. It’s rare, but does happen. They should of moved the younger brother when they found this out and the shot gun lists came out.

Twins are out in Different companies. Identical twins are kind of fun. It really screws up the upper class. We had one in my company. Their little sister ended up being my Plebe the next year. As you can see USNA is a very small world with lots of Mid Sibs.

This summer at PPW, one of my favorite memories was visiting DS’s room in Bancroft. He needed to run back and get something and our family was hanging out in the hallway. A detailer stops in mid stride and says “you got to be XX’s twin brother”. Without missing a beat, my DS’s indentical twin brother responds, “yes sir”.

Ours were 1/c and plebe. The younger was called Baby "last name" and Mini "first name." He loved it, but he loved naps in the company commander/platoon commander's room even more. And a few other perks.

Yep ! First week of Plebe we were in King Hall, seated by Platoon (company), filling out mountains of paperwork. (I suspect much of that is in the PTR now). Squad leader looks over and see's one of my Company-mates' identical brothers (and with short haircuts, they were identical !), does a couple looks and doubletakes....looks over at my Companymate, and says "____ do you have a brother here", "Yes sir", " ______ , don't you ever try it !" (Didn't have to be said --no switching places to mess with the upperclass).
