After USMMA Appointment Acceptance - Next Steps

We are trying to determine if we should drive or fly into New York for Indoc. If we drive it's about 1,000 miles and will take 15 hours. Flying is also an option, but more expensive (three tickets; no car unless rent one). When DS made his visit we flew and than took Uber to get around including a visit into NY City. It's certainly faster than driving, but having the car is nice. Travel by car will give DS a reimbursement of $545 for the 1,000 miles. If we fly USMMA will cover DS ticket. We are trying to manage cost plus time. I'm interest in others experience in making these travel arrangements.
Where do you find the information about reimbursement for air and car travel?
In the 2022 Reporting Instructions. For Class of 2023 one is to be sent out in May.

The government travel policy won't change in the 2023 instructions. The objective remains to get the required person from point A to Point B in the cheapest manner available to the government.

I'm seeing one way air ticket for my DS at $109. So I asume even if we drove we would only get the $109. Driving would be 1,000 miles and at government rate $545, but air for our DS would only be $109.

We thoroughly enjoyed having our whole family there (immediate family). We came several days before, which helped with the three hour time difference for our mid, and had a blast exploring NYC. The day before we moved to a hotel near the academy and had a quiet day. It was perfect for our family as it enabled us to share some rare time with all and for all of us to share in the joy of our son entering into KP. Plus, we were able to see families with whom we had become friendly with. We were able to get great views of our son running through the stations and he told us later it was a great thing to hear family and friends encouraging him. No tears whatsoever on that day. :)

Just our family's experience. If you are driving, I would suggest not getting there later in the day on the 4th--a day of relaxing and calming down can help all not feel so rushed. Plus it is 4th of July and how fun to watch the fireworks from Long Island over the city!

Very good point about the fireworks. Looks like we will fly in. Starting to make more sense, but was trying to save $$$, but by the time we pay for gas roud trip, food and all flying make more sense.

DS, got his wisdon teeth out today (Hoping ne feels better by Tuesday) and he got an e-mail saying his TWIC cardwas mailed. Progress being made.

I believe there are supposed to be fireworks at Jones Beach this year. Not to far from KP but traffic will probably be very slow. That's our plan.

Do Plebes get issued pack packs to carry their laptops and books to classes or do we need to purchase one?

Last year's logging book has a $30 neoprene sleeve listed under the laptop package and a $65 Jansport backpack listed under personal items. I'm assuming that will take care of carrying laptop and books.

Also.. the JTRs won’t reimburse any more than 400 miles one way, so I’d fly.

IMPORTANT: IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT HAVE A PASSPORT OR TWIC CARD, START THE PROCESS NOW. THEY ARE BOTH REQUIRED.

What about bringing a small fan? I see in earlier reporting day videos some are carringing small portable fans for their dorm rooms.

My DS wears glasses. Will he be issued glasses before or during indoc or does he keep his own.

Also, should we invest in prescription goggles?

Your son can keep his glasses, make sure he has two pair. He will also need an 'idiot strap'. This is lanyard that will keep his glasses on his head when he is exercising.
