Room and Board

@AROTC-dad, thanks for that thought. That's what we were planning on having our son do, contact his Battalion Cadre and then talk to financial aid. Our DS has already been introduced to and has been communicating with his roommate (if they both end up doing AROTC vs USMA). His sister school Embry-Riddle offers full everything, but I am not so sure his school does. I have asked our son to contact his ROO and find out about room and board, so we don't have any surprises. He has a full academic scholarship which covers everything in addition to his 4 Yr AROTC. I definitely do not want to interject as our son has handled everything on his own to this point. We have talked to him about taking the full scholarship and still doing AROTC, just on the University Scholarship, but we are not sure we can do that as our son has already acknowledged and accepted the 4yr AROTC Scholarship on a contingent basis to let them know by the middle of May if he is committing to AROTC.

There is nothing wrong with accepting a full university scholarship (that includes R & B) and then asking your cadre or Cadet Command for a "contract" instead of a scholarship. Actually, I believe that a non-scholarship contract actually has some advantages over the scholarship contract in terms of GI Bill benefits. There is also an advantage in that he cannot lose the university scholarship due to injury, and he is not obligated to pay back the university funds if he breaches the contract (grades, or rules violations).

+1 to AROTC-dad. As much as I love the various ROTC programs I would have had my son accept a full ride (including room & board) scholarship while still doing NROTC and eventually earning a contract by junior year, if not before. As he points out it avoids any obligation to pay back monies if the program isn't right for him or he inadvertently screws up. I know he will tell you it won't happen as he's fully committed. My son's NROTC class started with 45 kids. Only 15 made it through the program and some of them were on scholarship and were required to pay money back. There will be no problem declining the AROTC Scholarship and enrolling in the program anyway. Just be sure to let them know at your earlier convenience so monies can be re-routed to wherever they go.

Of course it's his decision anyway and it might be worth a conversation with the ROO at the desired institution to either put him at ease or confirm any decision he makes.

@AROTC-dad, @kinnem...Again Thank You both for the insight and knowledge. We will speak to our twins about this along with having them talk to their ROO's. I agree it is much easier to do the University Scholarship (no pitfalls in injury or dropping out) than to possibly owe a ton of money or have to serve 4 yrs AD as an E-1...:)

Can you give any insight as to why 2/3 did NOT make it through ?

Many dropped voluntarily. Some were dropped for poor academics. Some couldn't cut the physical aspects. For some it just wasn't for them. Some were dropped for DUI, and even drunken bar room brawls. Some were tossed for lies and some took swings at Sgts. There were many reasons, but my real point is that I'm confident they were all pretty certain they would successfully complete the program at the outset. Life and poor decisions intervene.

Typically it is one of the following that causes a cadet or mid to dis enroll (voluntary and involuntary)
  • Poor academics
  • poor fitness
  • Medical issues
  • It is not as glorious as they thought it would be.
  • Dissnrollment for criminal or disciplinary issues.
My DS began four years ago with an Army ROTC cohort of about 45, and now will commission with fewer than half this May.

LSU does not offer free room and board with the 4 year scholarship. You have the option to take the tuition and fees or the room and board. Louisiana residents get TOPS, so it would be wise for you to take the room and board through the scholarship and let TOPS pay for your tuition. Louisiana Tech also does not offer free room and board at this time with the 4 year scholarship. Grambling State, Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana Tech are all in the same Battalion. Grambling and Louisiana Monroe offer the free room and board with the scholarship, but not Louisiana Tech. They are in the process of getting everyone on the same page. When I spoke to the recruiter at Grambling, I was told hopefully in the next year for free room and board for all 3 schools. Northwestern State Louisiana does offer free room and board with the 4 year scholarship.

Prescott does provide room and board assistance for 4 year winners - please contact the campus to confirm your exact details. It's also nicely spelled out on their website. https://prescott.erau.edu/rotc/air-force/scholarships/

Four-Year Scholarship
If you are an incoming freshman, you may qualify for a full-tuition scholarship to attend Embry-Riddle Prescott.

High school seniors are encouraged to apply for the Army ROTC four-year scholarship through the national selection process. If a high school senior is awarded a four-year or three-year Advanced Designee scholarship while still in high school, they will receive room and board assurance money from Embry-Riddle that will activate when the scholarship goes into effect.

On-campus scholarships are awarded after a student has enrolled in Army ROTC and applied for and qualified for the scholarship. Campus-based scholarships pay for tuition and fees (it does not pay for flight fees), a monthly stipend for 10 months, and a book allowance each semester.

//to confirm, for Daytona Beach, there is additional funding but not full room/ board for Navy and Air Force scholarhip recipients. Also AROTC full room board only goes to 4 year scholarship winners per their detachment office.

please note that the room and board rules for four year ROTC recipients at Embry riddle Daytona Beach are changing. Army and navy 4 year national scholarship winners will receive room and board. Rules will be published soon. It appears that room and board will first now be paid from merit scholarships for these people. If you took an on-campus tour and learned that some merit scholarship monies were returned to the students and Embry, please make sure you do your due diligence in understanding that the rules are changing and the money is available is changing – and it’s changing to the students detriment

Please clarify. R&B is now covered at ERAU through merit scholarship money? So, if there is no merit scholarship money, the student now pays it? I'm attending ERAU as a 4 year scholarship winner and my last conversation with the ROO was that Doolittle Hall and the basic meal plan were included. Thanks!

Congrats on your 4 year award and acceptance to Embry Riddle. Outstanding school and programs. Which branch are you going into?

Meal Plan: Correct, the 14 meal basic plan and double room occupancy at Embry Riddle Doolittle Hall are included for AROTC students. I confirmed the same. fyi, If you opt for the highest meal plan, it will be about 900.00 per semester out of pocket/ not covered (the 21 meal plan where you can go to chik fil a or whatever for 14 of them).
Room - yes, If you only have partial or zero merit scholarships, the rest for room and board will be covered by ERAU. This is for both Army and Navy 4 year scholarship recipients for next year.

The negative impact here is for the students who had merit and 4 year scholarships. Currently ROTC merit students for AROTC had room and board paid by Embry, and their merit scholarships were sometimes credited back to the students in their accounts, and ultimately as a check back to them - actual money in their hand. The cap on this is the cost of attendance. Ask current students - many of them get a check back for these funds *up to the cost of attendance number. in some cases thousands per year. I spoke with Navy this week, who confirmed the same.

Now, those merit scholarships are going to be used first toward room and board, then Embry will cover the rest. That's the change.

To put this in context, If each 4 year scholarship winner would have gotten 4k per year for 4 years from merit into their accounts, through this, and there are for example 100 of you, then this is a 1.6 million dollar loss to the ROTC class of 2023.

by the way I don't know about Air Force.
So good news for Navy in getting room and board covered, and no change for Army for those without merit scholarships in getting room and board covered for 4 years.
From my perspective really bad news for those who previously would have received some of the merit money into their accounts.

I want to help - please PM me or advise on what additional details I can provide.

Hope this is useful.

Army. Very excited! And, thank you for the clarification. I also received the presidential merit scholarship from ERAU and financial aid did say that scholarship would go away now because of the 4 year. As far as outside scholarships, they won't use those towards R&B, right? I'd like that in my account as a buffer.

I am under the impression that there are no up to date lists outside of this forum, which is likely out of date. No. No room & board at these schools for AFROTC Scholarship recipients.

MIT and Stanford meet 100% demonstrated needs, so room and board could be covered if your family situation meets their criteria. Keep that in mind though, it is need-based, not merit.

BTW, CMU does not meet 100% needs (as of school year 2018-19).
