I was in a work meeting when my son was contacted by the Captain to come down to the recruiting office at 1330 today. They told him in person he was selected for the MO NROTC scholarship. They showed him a check with a significant amount of money. They want to do a celebration at his school, etc. This is an incredible honor and he is now realizing the hard work he put in over the years of school, athletics, working out with recruits, etc. has paid off but I think he is a bit overwhelmed right now. My question is around the school relationship. He could not explain this to me.

They literally removed his #1 school and placed Xavier on his list because he has Miami Ohio (He got accepted) as a University of choice. I noted Xavier has AF and AROTC but not NROTC. I called Xavier for some clarification when I saw this on his portal this past Wednesday but have not heard back. Does anyone have feedback? The Captain wants to talk to my son Monday but I will be, unfortunately, on a plane during that time. Here is the listing from his portal page.

Your Scholarship Application reflects the following College Choices:
1st College Choice: Xavier University
2nd College Choice: University of Colorado
3rd College Choice: San Diego State University
4th College Choice: Miami University
5th College Choice: University of San Diego

Any guidance, thoughts, feedback is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Is Xavier a cross-town affiliate of the host NROTC unit at Miami Ohio?

It's not clear if that's what was on the list he provided with his application, or if that's the list of schools for which they have authorized the scholarship. You're correct that Xavier doesn't appear to have an NROTC unit so it doesn't seem like it could be the latter.

What's his list of colleges? Make sure he takes it with him and indicates where he's been accepted and his preferences. I'm sure whatever confusion there is will be worked out. There is no longer a limit on the number of scholarship midshipmen who can be assigned to a unit. I'm sure your kid can handle this but if he needs to discuss something with you I'm confident they'll allow time to do that. He may have to use the scholarship transfer process but that shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: Did your DS apply to Xavier? If so, was he accepted?

I thought of that too but I can't find anything on the NROTC website or either college website that would indicate that. I suppose it's possible they are forming a new unit there that will be an affiliate, but they are 40 milers apart which would make things difficult, in my opinion anyway.

I'm thinking there was a data entry problem when the application was processed, but if that's the case the software wasn't implemented the way I would have chosen to do it. And since everyone knows my way is the best, that seems unlikely too. :D

His first school was Texas A&M and got in. It has been replaced with Xavier.

Here is the listing of NROTC schools he applied to, status of acceptance, and schools (on / not on) his application list:

Texas A&M - Accepted (On Application but now Xavier)
- He never applied to Xavier and I did not pay for the Application
U of San Diego - Accepted (On Application)
Colorado Boulder - Accepted (On Application)
Miami (OH) University - Accepted (On Application)
Marquette - Accepted (Not on Application)
San Diego State - Not Accepted (On Application)

He just sent me the picture of them with him and the 'Big Check'

Thank you for all the input and feedback.

So assuming A&M is his first choice I expect he'll be able to transfer the scholarship there, or any other school he has been accepted to. I imagine they want to meet with him on Monday to get this straightened out, once someone realized Xavier doesn't have a unit. Deep breaths. I'm sure it will be fine. They are there to help, not get in the way. If the meeting is on another topic, he could bring this up or just go ahead and follow the transfer process, which should be described with the scholarship info he receives.

Well, after another conversation with my son he was awarded the following:

Frederick C. Branch
The Frederick C. Branch Leadership Scholarship is for students interested in pursuing a Marine option NROTC Scholarship to one of 17 HBCUs, including Dillard University and Xavier University of Louisiana. Please reference the following link for further details:

https://www.marines.com/becoming-a-marine/commissioning-programs/four-year-colleges/nrotc

If you are interested in applying for the Frederick C. Branch Leadership Scholarship at Dillard or Xavier, please contact the unit at navy@tulane.edu. The submission deadline for the 2019-2020 school year is July 15th, 2019.

For Tulane and Xavier. He applied to Tulane and we are waiting to hear from them.

Probably not going to do this. Really frustrating.

I suspect the option of transferring may be limited to the 17 HCBUs.

The Frederick C Branch scholarship would apply to HBCUs (Historically Black College and Universities). The Xavier on the HBCU list is Xavier University of Louisiana. Maybe that's the issue?

Could it be Xavier University of Louisiana? Looks like a cross town of Tulane.

So, I just saw your comment after I posted mine. I was only aware of "XULA" because I was researching it for one of my Young Marine kids.
