Are there sunglasses regs for USNA? I'm looking to purchase a good pair of sunglasses to bring to the academy (after plebe summer, of course).

Not sure about the regs but you can’t go wrong with a pair of Randolph Engineering sunglasses. They’re made right here in the USA and Randolph made sunglasses specifically for the military.

If you don't want to shell out RE money on that style, AO via the grey market could be good to go. Either way, I wear a pair of REs that are probably about 60 years old that are good (also own a pair of AO). Gotta love the classic style, as I'm assuming we're talking about the Aviator style.

R.Eng. sunglasses are a good product just be careful about lens size. They sell the same frames,(styled the same), with different lens sizes. 52, 55, 58 width. I am 6 1" a 58 lens looks pretty good on me, 55s not so much and 52s are kinda comical.

If you are looking for something under the $250 R. Eng. s will cost, jump on EBay quick and search Maui Jim Waterways. They are an "Aviator", but they have nylon frames that won't get all bent up. Hi quality, lightweight, GLASS lens (best lens Maui Jim makes). Looks like a shop owner is selling off old stock (waterways were discontinued 2 years ago ---styles change). I wear sunglasses almost all the time, and I have a bunch of them. The waterways I own are one of my favorites. At $140 you can't go wrong with these. Good looking glasses.

They are a nice looking pair of glasses too, just google Maui Jim waterways review and watch a video on em.

If you are stuck on wire frames, you will find a Seringetti Marco on amazon for $127 again a discontinued style but just "killer". Maui Jims are probably a teeny weeny tiny better on optics (???) (don't think you'd notice) but the Marcos are photocromatic, glass lens, and they look sharp.

If I were your Dad sending you a pair of sun glasses, I'd choose the WaterWays; awesome optics, they will last longer than wire frames and why would you want to look like everyone else in their wire ray-bans. That said, when my wife gets a vote and wants me to look good she votes for the Marcos.

I know I know TMI -------- but I kinda collect these things. Seriously, I'd jump on either of these deals kinda quick.

Are there opportunities for mids to purchase and wear quality glasses? Are there many opportunities to go to the NEX?

The only time a Plebe could go to the NEX would be from 1200 to 2359 on Saturdays. The NEX is about three miles from Bancroft.

AO Original pilot with polarized lenses are my favorite pair.

I’m also curious about the regulation:

“Conservative sunglasses are permitted, except in military formations. Frames may be conservatively colored, subdued and complementary in nature to the uniform.”

Is a gold frame considered conservative? I’m sure I will have ample time to ask after plebe summer but I’m curious if anyone knows now.

Plenty of options in the Mid Store on the yard. You can cruise through there plenty after the summer.

If you peruse the various USNA social media sights, lots of pics. You will catch a Mid or 10 in sunglasses.

Or search #USNA and you will find examples of what they wear.

DS’s first trip was with all of us on PPW. After that, sponsor rides on liberty. It’s a very cool experience.

Oakley Sunglasses offers military & LE deep discounts on their products once you register with them. This involves uploading a copy of your ID. They have ballistic, sunglasses for women, off-duty styles, etc. I have 2 pairs of ballistic sunglasses & rate them highly. I won't post a link to their site as it might violate the SA forum's policy but it's easily searchable.

Seeing as gold framed REs/AOs were standard issue for about 40 years, they're within regs.
