That is quite a hockey program. What is that high school?
Bracken - pretty sure I remember you are from MN so I'm pretty sure you know which school I'm referring to. They wear green and gold and as my sons have jokingly say (they have friends there so I can say this), Every Day I Need Attention.
ders_dad, the reason I asked is that I suspected you were referring to the school you ID'd. I just didn't know they were getting soooo many kids recruited to D1 schools. The "needing attention" line made me LOL. Now I'm wondering if we know each other.

ders_dad I searched your profile which led me to the Navy forum and found your name on the appt thread for Navy Class of 2023. My hearty congrats go to you and DS and family! Your DS's EC experience couldn't have been more different than my DD who graduated from a tiny school. Because of the small size, she played 3 sports and did a bunch of other EC's too. A lot of our friends have kids in the Lakeville schools who experience the same kind of need to specialize that you describe. Fortunately it appears that the SA's understand this since they take kids from all sizes of schools.

LOL

The public high school I am referring to is in the community adjacent to us - it is a well-to-do community with a great tradition in hockey. Great school. They have won the Minnesota high school tournament many times. Kids start traveling hockey at age 5. Many ex-NHL players have kids in the program. My sons know a couple of guys who have played varsity hockey there. That’s basically all they did. For those who don’t know, high school hockey in Minnesota is a bigger deal - bigger than NHL and on-par with our 5 div 1 school programs. It’s like basketball in Indiana. Parents of competitive youth players pay tens of thousands of dollars for ice time, dry land training, etc. With hockey, it’s athletic ability x specialized coaching x ice time. These kids are probably getting 20-30 hrs of ice time per week year-round.

I played high school and college club hockey and I still play in over-50 competitive no- check leagues. I purposely did not push my kids into hockey in MN because it can be absolutely insane, time-consuming, expensive in metropolitan areas.

@ders_dad, you describe the community from which DD came, and her hockey experience nearly to a T. Started skating at 3, competitive hockey at 5. Was part of U14 state champion — a feeling topped only by a high-school state title. Alas, we moved to a new state before 9th grade. She switched to an elite-level club team that travelled North America. Said it was less intense than U14 back in MN. Now plays club hockey at USNA and enjoying the more laid-back approach.
