Ok. Has anyone else had this pop up? As DS has three weeks left in high school the seniors are starting to plan and carry out their Sr Pranks. I have always told DS to think about what you are doing and weigh what’s the best thing that can happen and what’s the worst thing that can happen when you do something.

We have the mom rule you can do anything you want as long as you can look your mom in the eye and tell her what you are about to do before you do it. If you can’t why are you doing it.

His class did something pretty harmless this week, they got a bunch of ride share scooters and disrupted traffic coming in and out of school.
He didn’t participate and got an earful from his classmates and friends. He explained he has an NROTC scholarship and can’t jeopardize it getting in trouble or getting hurt. D1 bound Scholarship athletes told him he was full of garbage because they were doing it.

He stood his ground and didn’t participate and told him he did the right thing and that to be leader and to serve he had to be different than the rest and sometimes that’s not easy and can be lonely doing what’s right.

Has anyone else had to deal with this?

I simply told my two kids that this was a test. If your judgement is so poor as to participate in something stupid that could impact your future then you absolutely did not have the judgement necessary to attend a SA and you should forget about it. Now do what you think is best and be prepared to live with the results.

My DS participated and as soon as it was over and was advised to return to class he did. He understands what is at stake and the prank was harmless (blocking entrance to the school at arrival and tailgating).

As a 25 year HS teacher (who has a son commissioning next Friday....YEAH!!!), I can concur. Most senior pranks are pretty lame, yet administration seems to always want to swat a housefly with a sledgehammer.

In our building, our 160 or so seniors all have their lockers on opposite sides of the same hallway. Two years ago, everyone left their phones in their lockers (major achievement there) and all set their alarms to go off at the exact same time. It was during the senior exam week. Funny, relatively harmless, and the administrators were none too pleased.

My daughter is at a Military School. All students are members of Marine Corps JROTC. There weren't many senior pranks, but she isn't one to follow the crowd. She has marched to the beat of her own drum since she was born, she will join in if she sees value in the activity, but if she deems it to be stupid or not worth risking other things for, she'll just walk away.

I told her about our end of year pranks at DODDS , she wasn't impressed. Dumping the 2.5 - 4 feet of papers into the court yard was ridiculed as "not too smart" because they had our names on them, so it wasn't covert enough. o_Oo_O

What you wrote about it being lonely doing what's right sometimes resonates with me. My DS was once asked what his "spirit animal" would be and why. He responded that it would be the eagle, because it soars high above everything, even though it sometimes must soar alone. It sounds like your DS made the mature decision, looking at the big picture. That's what is expected of leaders. Sure, he probably coul dhave participated and not had any reprucussions for his scholarship, but he decided not to risk it. Good for him.

I’m a high school teacher and one year the seniors blocked all entrances to the parking lots with their cars, SUVs, dad’s BMWs, etc. I get to work an hour and a half before I need to and when I pulled up and saw what was going on, I jumped the curb, drove over the grass, and pulled into my spot. I went to my room and awhile later looked out and watched the cars lined up on the main road waiting to get in. I beat the prank and enjoyed watching those who didn’t. The SRO rolled out in his cruiser and they moved before the buses came in.

Son's class filled the administration's hallway with balloons from floor to ceiling....it was pretty funny. Principals and all assistants posted photos and seemed to enjoy the moment.

That is one that both funny and low risk.
One year a bunch of Mensa members rolled out dozens of marbles in the hallway during passing time between periods. A few students fell but fortunately we had no casualties. The cowards were never identified and got away with it.

Maybe they just lost their marbles, because they had so many. (With a nod to @AROTCDad)

That was indeed a foolish one, where serious injury could have occurred.

I’ve always been a fan of filling the two or three most used entrance vestibules with canned goods. Its fun, funny, and has the added benefit of charity.

Those pranks pale in comparison to many USNA "recon raids" that I am familiar with from my time at USNA and I was glad to see some good ones when my son was a mid.

some kids released 3 pigs in the building and numbered them 1,2 and 4.
