Good morning everyone,

I’ve heard talk about the academic schedule possibly changing from trimesters to quarters with a few other changes as well for the class of 2023.

Does anyone know anything about this or know if it’s true or not? Thank you.

The change to the quarter system has not officially been approved yet but it most likely will be and will start in the fall of 2021. I am not sure what you mean by "a few other changes."

THANK YOU !!!! Bout freakin time to end this silliness.

I liked trimesters when I was there. I've talked to a few faculty members who were students on the quarter system, and they also prefer trimesters....

I had quarters as a freshman and trimesters thereafter. With the sea year system there are some definite advantages to the quarter system. One of them is how sports interact with the academic calendar.

No. The number of days required for licensing remain the same. The change will be that instead of the time at sea being divided 1/3 and 2/3 (third class and second class), it will be 1/2 and 1/2.

That is the consensus, but the two faculty folks I still touch base with are heavy into the STCW compliance side of things, and they both feel that quarters are worse for the academic aspects of KP. The regulatory environment we’re in today will continue to make things more difficult, especially the international requirements. I haven’t seen many changes in my short career on the domestic side, but SOLAS and STCW seem to get changed about as fast I as change underwear.

I’m not astute enough to see how trimesters vs quarters would effect SOLAS vs STCW requirements. In my mind I see increased flexibility when there are more course opportunities.

Did they have any specifics and are these older faculty that were there during the prior quarter system? Just wondering their perspective.
