Do fourth class cadets select their courses and majors before their first year, or are your first courses selected for you? Like foreign language. I notice that foreign language is a core course that everyone has to take, but how is it decided what foreign language you’re going to take? Does hat academy get to choose? Do I choose? Do I make like a list?

With a few exceptions, your first semester courses are entirely selected for you. They are practically all core classes, so you and your squadmates will usually be taking a good number of the same courses. The exceptions generally are anything you can validate, namely math, physics, chem, and a language. You take the math placer before arriving, the chem exam in BCT, and if you've taken any language the Academy offers, the language exam during BCT. All of those offer the opportunity to validate courses, so take them seriously. In the language exam, you fill out you preference for language selection, which is considered, but not guaranteed.

While we are on the topic of majors and courses, "shop" your squadron for your books. Most classes use the same books each year (not always, so double check) so upperclassmen will sell their books at the beginning of each semester. Our DS has been able to buy almost all of his books for the past two years this way. Most of the time, only paying $10-$30 a piece (much cheaper than new). He and his roommate were even able to share a few books since they had different times for the same class.

You won't really have a choice... You will decide on your major as soon as you like and you could possibly even get a majors class the second semester. Language is the only one you have any say over. You can put in your preferences and they will try and get you what you want, but in the end you really just take the classes they tell you doolie year.
