Commandant suspended

Very interesting. Commandant Goodwin is one of the kindest and most inspiring people I have ever met. Wonder what the issue is

This is concerning Brig. Gen. Kristin Goodwin.
At least it isn't "due to a loss of confidence in ability to lead" that you read more often than not, these days.
She's "being investigated" - so there has to be some sort of allegation(s) of wrongdoing - but the linked article is pretty vague. She could be cleared of this/these allegation(s), so I'm not going to judge her.

After reading the article it looks like USAFA will come out with more information tomorrow.

There are hundreds of ways to lose your job when in a leadership position, especially a highly visible one such as this. She is accountable and responsible for mission performance and for the actions of those in her organization, as well as her own actions. These decisions are not taken lightly by the chain of command, because of the disruption it can cause. They must have credible allegations and supporting evidence.

Air Force Academy removes commandant of cadets amid inquiry

https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/...my-removes-commandant-of-cadets-amid-inquiry/

"Goodwin, a former B-2 bomber pilot who moved to the school with her wife and children, was praised by some for a tough new set of discipline polices that made cadets tow the line. She also faced criticism for her stormy relationship with subordinates and colleagues, a few of whom referred her with the imperial nickname 'duchess,' the general's callsign from flying days. Several academy officers who requested anonymity because they were not authorized by the academy to speak about the case said Goodwin was a caustic leader who treated those under her roughly and was easily riled."

“She’s a 4.5 star wacko,” one former academy officer said of Goodwin, with whom he served.

Agree with @Capt MJ ... Willing to wait and see/hear the details ... doubtful the Academy Superintendent would have made this call if the situation was "gray" but will see ...

There hasn’t been a peep since the original release. All the sources seem to be using the same press release.

If it’s administrative in nature and substantiated, she’ll probably not be offered another set of orders and would likely retire. I’ve just seen “Command climate” issues cited, which usually is code for “the boss is a screamer/vindictive/personally abusive/inappropriate in some way.” That kind of stuff used to be tolerated back in the day. Not so much anymore. Quite rightly, the process wheels will grind.

If you're a male, you're a hard charger, if you're a female you're a... you know the rest.
Ten years ago, I'd have jumped on that bandwagon but I've seen much less of that in recent years. There are actually tyrants of BOTH genders. If
you want an example, look up Capt Holly Graf USN. Don't take this as a shot against women because there are many cases of males who were her equal
but part of how she got as far as she did was people excusing reports of her behavior as gender bias.

@OldRetSWO @Capt MJ : I agree with your points. They reminded me of certain people I forgot about! In my experience in a very large organization though, for every 1 (confirmed) female tyrant there were many more female bosses where my above phrase was applied to unfairly. This was what I was trying to point out.

That's a sexist claim. As sexist as the claim that said females only got the job because of their gender.

So is this case officially sealed? Was trying to find a follow up article and found nothing. Been two weeks. I have a daughter applying in the next year or two so I was very interested in this case.

Today I posted in the 'Academy/Military News' forum an article from the AF Times which criticizes the promotion process failure to address toxic leadership. Those interested in this current post may wish to check it out.

I don't know if you have read them but I highly recommend the pieces by Col 'Ned Stark' ( a pseudonym) on the site War on the Rocks they outline a lot of the issues with the current process for promoting officers and got enough attention that Gen Goldfien responded.

Give credit where credit is due, the Generals timing on "class dismissed" in 2018 was "on time, on target"!

Hm. Is she not the 2nd USAF to be dismissed this year for inability to lead or whatever jargon they're pushing now?

The official USAF investigation report is out and the allegations against the general are substantiated.

It also found she failed to maintain a healthy command climate by making false or untruthful statements, unnecessarily blaming her staff for her own shortfalls, and that she made decisions and conducted herself in a way that led others to view her as a “self-serving” leader.

Well, once again a GOFO is torpedoed by substantiated travel and ethics infractions, plus the catch-all, “failed to maintain a healthy command climate.” I don’t know what it is about some General Officers and Flag Officers when they put on that star, they lose that part of their brain that keeps them in bounds with the travel and ethics regs (and often the part of the brain that tells them they can sleep with the wrong people or become a screamer). Those infractions form the rock-solid part of the case, and then it’s easier to carry the “command climate” charge, which is more subjective by its nature.

No doubt she did many good things during her career to get where she is, but all it takes is one “oh s_ _ t” to erase a pile of attaboys/girls.

It will be interesting to see the outcome. Retire quickly with one star, pay and allowances intact, repay the govt for estimated travel infraction? Something more punitive? No doubt a letter of censure in her record.
