HERNDON - Class of 2022

Leave room for your MidStore swag!

I was over at the NEX around midday across the Severn River, and an entire class of what looked like plebes was running across the NA Bridge and straggled out, going up the rise into the NSA part of the base. They looked totally sweated out in camo, boots and packs. No doubt headed for another fun event. I had a 2014 visiting grad in the car, and she just started laughing. “USNA - bad place to be, great place to be from.”

Went to see John Wick 3 last night with our DS. A very popular movie with the Mids!

Keanu Reeves has been training with Taran Tactical for years, and now they have a new student who is pretty good in her own right (Halle Berry).

Herndon is just a wake-up away, now.
I talked with several Mids moving their stuff to storage yesterday, and they all said the same thing; "That went really fast!"

Pretty light on the grease there...just saying !

(The truth is, the bulk of the grease gets wiped off quickly, and ends up in eyes and generally makes a mess...its that light coat thats left, with water and sweat that makes the climb a challenge). BZ '22 - good time.

How do they decide which plebes get to make the mad dash and help with the climb? Obviously there are not 1200 plebes in the picture.

"Iron Company" is the company each year that "wins" Sea Trials. This year, it was 14th Company. Iron Company rushes the monument first, but other Plebes cycle in as they tire out.
They all line up on Stribling Walk in the order of their Company's finish at Sea Trials.

Just so everyone is aware, they yell "Plebes No More!" after Herndon, because they aren't Plebes anymore. They are however, only 4th class (4C) Midshipmen. They do not technically become "Youngsters" (3C) until they change out their shoulder boards on Friday (at Commissioning), when that first cover thrown into the air hits the deck.

Everybody participates, although I suspect some are already on Cruise, and would expect some of the athletes are probably told to stay out of the fray. While every class has probably had a "plan" for conquering Herndon, i.e. the big bulky guys at the bottom., little skinny agile guys climb, etc, every plan fails with first contact with the enemy. The first 20-30 minutes are usually chaos, and then it really does become a test of organizational skills, leadership, ingenuity, and will.

I’m not a very emotionally expressive person (much to DW’s chagrin). Yet I couldn’t help but get teary eyed at two points. One, when the officer’s cover stuck on the third toss and pandemonium ensued while the human pyramid collapsed. Two, when 1200 plebes-no-more — stripped down, sweaty, dirty, exhausted from the year and not just the one hour and five minutes — held hand to heart and sang “Blue and Gold.” I cried, knowing DD was in the crowd doing that very thing. I cried and hoped no one would walk into my office just then. Plebe year is like nothing else in the world.
