I’ve looked at the naval academy majors and was wondering USNA has any martial majors? I know west point and the Air Force academy both do, but it would strange if USNA was the only academy to not offer a martial major.
There are different philosophies at work here, not strange at all, just different. The academic majors are designed to create a broad base of undergraduate knowledge and prepare midshipmen for further training post-commission in their Navy or Marine Corps warfare specialties. The USNA Professional Development Department oversees the required ProDev academic credit courses, summer training and ongoing professional training. The just-in-time approach is continued in the Fleet and Corps, with professional schools, training, and advanced education and degrees available, similar to other Services.
Though there may not be a “military studies” major, case studies and pro knowledge are soaked into the Brigade in various forms in both academic and non-academic settings.
I don’t believe USCGA and USMMA offer specific military studies majors either, so three of the five Federal academies do not. I would have been surprised if they had, due to their unique missions. I can see why it would seem odd that one of the three DOD academies did not offer a formal major in that area.
The Navy and Marine Corps are definitely interested in military studies and educating their officers; it’s a different approach.
