Anyone have any good horror stories about the food coming out of delano? Or any other input regarding the food service at KP?

Not to bash it, but I’ve been severely disappointed in the meal output during my last 2-3 years at the academy. Even coming back from sea, where several of the ships I was on prepped meals with far less resources, I was severely let down. Chalk it up to lack of funding or whatever the cause may be. (On another note our current midshipman fees incorporate a barber fee of 150$ per mid, if im correct. Males and females. The barbers are notoriously atrocious. I, and many of my classmates, have not returned to the academy barber since plebe year. Allocate some of that funding to the meal funds? Definitely some reorganization needed.)

I have had the occasional good meal at delano, but they’re few and far between. This is all my personal opinion of course.

I was always a fan of the soup and salad bar. That and the diet tables always had the best food. There were a few other winners and some notorious losers.

The worst I recall was the linguine with what was referred to as clam sauce but I cant vouch for that, a goulash type dish of some sort, and I forget what meat they pretended to serve us. I recall the meat specifically because my table captain was from Montana and had taken agricultural courses in high school where he tagged along with meat inspectors. He said the meat would not have typically been allowed to be served to humans.

I don't know if they still do it, but they used to close tables on a rotating basis to save money. They knew there would be a certain number of M/N absent from each meal so rather than have half empty tables they would close some and expect the affected M/N to find seats among the other tables. This was the genesis of the description "He/She'd sell out their Mother for a seat in Delano"

The soup and salad bar is still the best thing. There are no diet tables.

They do this all the time. As a 1/C I usually sit at the Reg table when they do it, but as a plebe you have to sell out your mother.

Do they still have theme nights? I remember during 1/C year they had a German theme night, and they brought in an Oom Pah band. So there I am eating German food listening to this music and a plebe gets up and starts German folk dancing. Honestly at first we were like WTF, but he kept going and was really good. I want to say he ended up standing on one of the tables folk dancing while this band was absolutely getting down playing German oom pah music. The place was going nuts cheering for him, and I though to myself is this really happening? After one song he stopped. I finished my schnitzel and went back to studying. That's a day in the life at KP folks.

Nope, no organized theme nights in my day. . . and a salad bar?

Back in his day if they wanted salad they tied a rope around the cadet, threw him over the side, and had him pull the grass off the underwater hull. If someone wanted croutons they sent him back to scrape the barnacles, same great crunch!
