James Holzhauer Current 1.1M Jeopardy! Champ Talks Strategy

I watched the Jeopardy episode. The dude is amazing.

“...you’re not going to play well if you’re up there trembling.”

Agree. After a while it looks as if the other contestants stop playing & just watch him.

Most probably view it as an exercise in futility after James gets all of the $1000 clues AND finds the daily doubles. I can't say that I blame them, though. I was excited to see that a contestant made it a challenge for him yesterday. It's magnificent to see him run through practically every category with ease.

It's not just his knowledge but his outrageously ambitious gambling. Final Jeopardy, for example. He's winning $50K to his opponents $10K & $5K. Wouldn't a safe bet be $30K? No, he bets $40K - and wins.

Vegas roller, baby.

There is no point in betting 30K instead of 40K. He knows that if he bets 40K and he is wrong, he will still win the the game. Winding up with 10K less isnt going to make much of a difference. However if he wins, (which he does all the time) he would have left 10K off the table by betting only 30K. I realize its 10K in either case but I think he prefers to lose 10K by having the wrong answer than losing 10K by being timid. Think of it as baseball. You can swing 3 times and possibly strike out or not swing at all and strike out. If you swing you make strike out or you may get on base. If you dont swing at all, you will never get on base

James being so comfortable with taking risks is what sets him apart from Ken Jennings and other knowledgeable contestants. While the old way of playing consisted of choosing categories with lesser value first, James goes for the big money unafraid of what the clue may be. I've seen a lot of talk about him ruining the game and I found myself agreeing for a moment (probably because I'm not a gambler), but he's changing it in ways that I could never have imagined. After 20 years of watching the show, I thought I'd seen it all. I wonder how many more games it will be before Holzhauer obliterates Jennings' $2,520,700 record.
Any bets?

Based on his average winnings, he only needs to win 10 more games after Monday to beat Ken Jennings.

I do agree in a sense that game is less competitive and less exciting as the other two players are usually irrelevant. It is exciting to see how much money he can make per game. On the other hand, i watched the Teachers Tournament and I thought that was boring as the amounts were low and no one was willing to take a chance by betting high. What is completely idiotic and I have seen it happen in the normal game with James and in the tournament, is that people who know they are last place will bet conservatively guaranteeing them last place even though by betting everything they had, they could come in second if it worked out or remain in last place if they couldnt answer the question. Since the minimal bet or going all in with the wrong answer gets you to last place, why not risk all of it for second place

Sitting in the low pressure environment of my couch, I usually answer a high percentage of answers. I would probably stammer to the point of embarrassment if I were on set with other players.

I'd probably crack under the pressure, too though I like to think otherwise. The likelihood that I'd embarrass myself increases exponentially playing alongside someone like James. I'll enjoy the safe space on the couch until I answer enough questions on the online contestant test.
