I’m a believer in the “5 minutes early is 15 minutes late” ideology and am also aware that The Yard will be crazy busy on I Day. We’ll be staying in a VRBO just off campus so the plan is to walk right to the entrance.

With that in mind, how early should I be on campus before my report time? Also, how long does it typically take to enter through the gates?

Entering the Yard is quick and easy. The guards know you — and 1200 of your new best buddies — are coming. Aim to be there 30 minutes early, to minimize stress, get the lay of the land and have light conversation with your family before saying goodbye.

A good start is erase the word “campus.” For you from now on, it’s The Yard!

You should be in line at Alumni Hall at your report time, along with everyone else who was given that time. Report times are staggered to support a steady uptake and processing flow. Walking up to the line 10 minutes before your scheduled time will be about right. No one is keeping track, they are just getting people in the doors at a steady flow.

Remember your pace will be the same as the slowest walker in your party. If you’ve overpacked, allow for that.

If you’re walking in through Gate 1, the Commodore Barry walk gate on Prince George St., you’ll be standing in the security line, so allow for that.

From the security checkpoint, it takes about 15 minutes to walk to Alumni Hall, 10-12 if you’re stepping right along.

Then you get to wait in line. As you will throughout your military life.

Does the bus from the stadium drop you off at a gate or at Alumni Hall?

I'm pretty certain the bus stops at Alumni Hall. There are enough civilians on the Yard converging on Alumni Hall that you can probably figure it out and it's not more than a 15 minute walk anywhere on the Yard.

Yes, @Capt MJ! From now on:

Campus => Yard
Dorms => Mother B
Cafeteria => King Hall
Fraternity/Sorority => Company
“Let’s party!” => Huh?

DD was very gigged up for her 6:15 report time. Though we were technically walking, we covered the 1.5 miles from AirBNB to Alumni Hall in approximately 13 minutes. That included the minute it took to snap a couple “thumbs-up” photos as she crossed the gates of campus — ahem — The Yard. I was winded when we got there.

The five basic responses...3 CaptMJ listed above....plus “no excuse” and “aye aye.”

Don’t forget the sir/ma’am sandwiches...otherwise it becomes double and triple sandwiches. “Sir, sir, sir, yes sir, sir, sir”.

Ah yes, those too. Regardless of entry point into the military, there are certain things that always seem to be part of it!

Don't forget the sixth basic response " I screwed up......" (or variations thereof , depending upon how salty the a$$ chewing superior is.). It's amazing how effective this is, as the chewer is put into the position of having to agree with you.

I witnessed this (the saltier version) as an officer. A Marine LCpl used this when speaking to a Navy LT beside me. It was hard not to laugh. The LCpl stole a glance in my direction when the LT looked away. It was priceless.

My DS has forbidden me from using lingo. I get eyeroll and laughs. Im a non-military mom and 1) haven’t earned the right to that club 2) I just plain sound stupid.

It’s almost a foreign language!

Those report times technically aren’t absolute. They randomly assign them because they can’t handle all 1200 plebe candidates coming at the same time, so they have them staggered between 6 and noon. Technically you can arrive at any point within that timeframe, but strive to be close to your assigned time anyway so as not to contribute to any hiccups.

Kierkegaard is right

The clear intention of report times is to maintain a constant flow of Ps2Bs through the process. Most Ps2B will simply step into a line behind 30-50 other Ps2B when they arrive at their appointed time. I wouldn't plan on arriving 30mins late, but no body is there taking notes on who arrived 5-10mins late.

Not hugely important info, except to note that a Mom, or Dad, or Grand Pa, who wants spend every possible last moment with their P2B shouldn't lose that opportunity because Plebe thinks he/she needs to sprint ahead in fear of being 1o mins late. A P2B may get pulled from the line, and screened ahead of parents-n-family. Once through, Plebes are directed to proceed on toward Alumni Hall. If Mom, Dad, GP&GM , etc., have been left behind and P2B is not running seriously late-----there is no problem with stepping aside and waiting for family to clear security so you can walk across campus together.

Note: I am not part of the "Brain Trust" here. This advise reflects my experience and that of others who offered me this info to me 3 yrs ago. If I have it wrong someone please correct me.

NOTE NOTE NOTE: I am not suggesting that you amble up to your intake desk 45mins late ---- you just don't need to make GrandMa do a 5min mile across campus to avoid being 5 mins behind your time.

Sincerely:
David Hume

Proof-reading is not a strenght; ....."I ment to say a P2B may get pulled from the security line at Gate 1"

Some do find a way to party!

Indeed they do!

Like Halloween. Awesome costumes, much frivolity, plenty of smiles and laughs. Then the clock struck 8:00 and the party was promptly over — at least for plebes. Back to the books! About an hour before other college students in America headed out...for the pre-party.

@MidCakePa I am guessing you have a new youngster. When you have some experience you will understand my comment. Trust me the plebes find a way to party also!
