Hello all,

As my senior year approaches, we are choosing classes. I have been part of a select chorus group (it is a class at my school) since freshman year. Right now, I have to option to take that for senior year, or AP Chemistry or Physics. My overall GPA in science is a 3.857 unweighted, as I earned a B in first-semester Chemistry, but have earned all A's since then. (Biology, Chemistry, IB Biology HL, AP Environmental Science) My weighted science GPA is a 4.286. Should I continue with my chorus (I really enjoy it and the people and my teacher) or take AP Chem or Physics? Any help is accepted and want to say thanks for reading this. I'll be attending USNA Summer Seminar and USCGA AIM this summer!

what else are you taking that you could switch out for Physics? You should really take physics...

Hello, because I am a full international baccalaureate diploma program student, there is a required amount of courses that I must take within the IB. Because of those required courses, there is only room for one other class, which would have to be between AP chemistry, physics, or chorus. What are your thoughts? Because I have been part of choir the last three years, it could look good on my application to show well roundedness, but it is also beneficial to take physics or another science class.

Contact an admissions officer or Coast Guard Academy admissions partner. They'd have the best insight given your overall record.

As others have recommended, talk to admissions, but physics and chem are pretty much must haves. Having a well rounded transcript is nice but you have to check all the boxes, too. No physics ever might raise a flag.

I would recommend the physics. I don't know if not having it would raise a flag, but it will make your life easier at the Academy to have that under your belt.

+ one to that.

Doe the chorus meet after school or at lunch or during a flex period? Maybe you can still be affiliated at times other than during a class period.

Please stay in chorus if you love it. Your academic record sounds solid and if you have sufficient leadership and athletics activities then you should be fine. For most majors at USCGA you can either have to take two semesters of chemistry and one semester of physics or two semesters of physics and one semester of chemistry. Seems with you chemistry background that may be even able to validate a semester of chemistry and the take CHEM II and Physics I and be done with it. Physics I at USCGA is not even calculus based, so I think you will be OK without having physics in high school.

Thank you.

USCGA is a STEM school. Things like chorus are important only after you have maximized your STEM experience. I would strongly suggest AP Physics in your senior year. The more STEM the better!!

To piggy-back on "corescue59"'s point, as a STEM school Calculus is also a must. I am a bit familiar with the IB program and it is my understanding that Calculus isn't necessarily "a must" (please correct me if I am wrong). So....just thought I would throw that out there in terms of your schedule since you have made no mention of your mathematics background. Is it safe to assume you have already taken or plan on taking Calculus? That course, like physics, is pretty important to admissions consideration of your transcript.

Totally agree with future.mil.mom. Calculus is a must as well as physics.
