High School Graduation

.
Fyi -- our DDs BGO was not able to present her BFE presentation folder to NAPS at her Monday morning 6/3 senior award ceremony ... so he found a "Backup" BGO USNA class of '91 to take his place.
.
This meant everything to her .... The lengths that these BGOs will go to recognize their future kin is amazing. And yes, her school, and her county in general, is very supportive of Military service, ROTC, and the Academies.

We're not a military family but our fathers were combat veterans and I grew up with a great respect for (and was taught to respect) men and women who serve in the armed forces. DW and I have tried to instill this in our sons (pretty successfully, thanks to important community institutions). But in the last few months, we have been surprised and saddened by the very negative responses that acquaintances, clergy, teachers, etc. have had to DS's decision to attend USNA. This is not universal, by any means, but it has come from several sources we would have never suspected. The senior administration of our school district has not been friendly. It's been an eye-opener for us (I guess we are naive).

We had similar problems. College guidance counselor had issues with the military and had to be forced to do what was needed for DS’ application. Jesuit Catholic school, so not a big surprise.

While my son's HS has a separate award night, the principal wanted the presentation done at the graduation ceremony. My son felt funny about it, because he didn't want to take away from the other graduates (700). But he gave in, knowing that the school was proud of the accomplishment, and that the presentation might encourage a kid in the audience to pursue a SA someday.

We thought it would be a simple thing, but his BGO took over 5 mins talking about my son's accomplishments and all that it takes to receive an appointment. When my son walked on stage to accept the folder, there was a standing ovation. 700 of his classmates and thousands in the audience. I'm still tearing up; it only happened two nights ago. The community is proud and thrilled for him. It's a good feeling knowing that.

By no means is this standard practice. Like the others said, if it happens it is it likely the BGO. However, that doesn’t mean the school can’t do something to highlight any appointments. Ours spotlights any appointees by having them lead the procession for the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies by carrying the US, State and City flags, they sit on stage in the front row to be recognized and are called out in the commencement program.
