Falcon Foundation Scholars to Northwestern Prep Fall 2019

Any Falcons who have selected Northwestern Prep for the Fall?
DS from VA just accepted FS last night and will be attending NWP. It seems like an amazing program and incredible opportunity.
Congrats to your DS and family! We agree, and are very excited for this opportunity for our DS.
Thx! Congrats to your DS, too. I guess they’ll be prepsters together. We have a friend who went through the program in 2016 and loved it. Have you seen the YouTube videos? It looks like they also get to have some fun.

Yes, the videos make it seem like glorified summer camp! Glad you have a friend who went through and can provide personal insight - the program sure looks fantastic. Will you plan to fly with him to NWP or send him solo?

We haven’t figured out the plans just yet.

Looking for some reaction as we do our due diligence on self prep options. NWP accepted my DS as a self prep without a complete application within days of his first submittal. That raised a red flag for him. I've also read on this forum that some SA admissions folks view NWP as an SAT/ACT mill. I've also of course seen very favorable postings, although those seem to be mostly for sponsored preps. Thoughts for a possible self prep? My DS has RMA and MMI also in his sights.

MMI is an accredited junior college, so any credits he earns are transferable. This is especially important if he doesn't get accepted on his reapplication and needs to move to an alternate plan. In addition, MMI has Air Force ROTC in conjunction with the University of Alabama. He can take his Aerospace Science courses and have them transfer into an AFROTC program at an alternate school.

Disclaimer: I teach at MMI and am the faculty advisor for Coast Guard Academy applicants.

DS is a Falcon Foundation and heading to NWP. It's just beginning to sink in and he's getting more excited each day. It's funny we both still check the USAFA website and make sure nothing changed. What an incredible honor.

Thank you. That is important information.

I was a free agent at NWP last semester and received my appointment to USAFA a week ago and USMMA a few weeks prior. People probably get the impression that it's an SAT/ACT mill because they just see large increases in people's test scores. The funny thing is that we never took a class specifically designed for test prep. Instead, we focused on memorization skills(learn 1400 vocab words/definitions/spelling), time management, physical fitness, current events, physics, chemistry, math, and english. The culmination of all those things is what boosted my ACT from a 30-34 and my SAT from a 1350-1540. My fellow prepsters can tell the same story.

I recommend this thread: https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/falcon-foundation-scholarship-2018.60404/

Please continue doing your due diligence because this isn't a decision to be taken lightly! I can only speak for NWP and I'm sure your DS will excel any place he chooses. Best of luck and please ask any more questions you have!

NWP and the Durbecks have their act together and run a great program. There are three types of students who attend. Sponsored, free-agent and college prep. As outlined above, vocabulary and sentence structure are a huge boost since high schools are failing to prepare students for college and life in general. The second semester, students enroll at a local college and attend Math, English, History and Chem with a Lab. The Durbecks don't put up with any BS and hold the students to a strict code and dress standard. Although the students are all there to move forward with college or a SA. They do have all the SA admission office stop and pay a visit. The Durbecks also have great communication and relationship with all SA admission departments.

Push Hard, Press Forward

Thank you for all this good information. In the end of the day, I'm guessing my DS needs to find the place that is the best fit for him where he can be the most successful. All these prep schools are listed by the SAs so presumably means they hold them in high regard. It ultimately comes down to my DS and his achievements and accomplishments.

I'm going as a free agent! Hope we can connect before September!

Starting a private FB group for all NWP-bound prepsters. Please PM me to be added!

DD is a Falcon headed to NWP. She is also attending ACE Program in July and looking forward to all that lies ahead!

If you received a falcon scholarship and go to NWP is it still one semester or are you there the whole yr? If one semester only what do you do in the winter semester

At NWP, you attend for the fall semester, usually early September to mid-December, and then go to the university/community college of your choice for the spring semester.

ok I wasn't sure if that was only for self preps or for everyone :) Thanks for clarifying
