One year ago today (June 28, 2018) you Youngsters were taking the oath and beginning Plebe Summer.

Now, the Summer is in full swing and many of you are in all parts of the World doing summer training blocks. Just think of everything that you know now, that you didn't know a year ago. Think about what you have seen and what you have been exposed to, this year.

It was a good year!

Same to the parents! It’s a whole different feel this year. I really enjoyed watching the Oath online yesterday. Blows my mind to think what I didn’t know then. Its almost like becoming a parent for the first time. The apprehension. Then after a year, it’s not so bad.

Everyone remembers the day of I Day. My friends and I always text and call to wish each other Happy I Day and Happy Commissioning Day. It’s engrained for life. It’s a long year, but you learn a ton. People often ask how I can read a sheet of information and retain facts so quickly... I always say Plebe Year. Wish I had been that good at memorizing rates!

I know I have related this before, but every year, on the anniversary of their I-Day, DH’s classmates in the area or who travel in as they can, meet at the Columbarium at 1800 to toast those classmates who have passed away, and those from previous years. They read the names, they share stories and memories, and yes, they actually toast with adult beverages. Then many go into DTA for dinner, though the Severn Inn across the river has become a favorite for bar food.

I remember very little about I-day, including the date. I 'm pretty sure it was +/- a few days of July 4, because I recall flying cross country at night and watching fireworks. Perhaps it was a little anti-climatic for me, as I was checking in from NAPS, and it was kind of a continuation of the year before. Facebook has been a great way to connect with Classmates, as we exchange stories about I-Day.

Oh very few actually remember the events of the day, but for some reason we all remember the day we swore in. Was a few days before July 4th as that was a different experience. I actually remember a lot from I Day itself. I think because it went by myself I had the bye part over with and didn’t have that anticipation looming after the swearing in. My sponsor brother and I, who is my best friend now, laugh about I Day all the time.

From the parent prospective, last year on this day: I knew where DS was, knew he probably wasn't having a ton of fun, knew when I'd hear from him again (phone call #1). Exactly one year later: no idea where he is, probably having a blast, no idea when I'll hear from him again. Agree, it was a good year!

Sent our Youngster a picture from Iday last year. He wrote back, “That seems like a long time ago”. Says he is happy to be out in the fleet for his Youngster cruise, and glad to have Plebe year in the rear view mirror.

As far as my wife and myself were concerned, our DS had a great time. Not a single hiccup along the way and everything went smooth as silk.
His girlfriend related some different stories to us, however. Apparently, he was a bit more candid with her about the Plebe year overall experience. ;)

He's back for a few days between training blocks now, and is looking forward to reform in August. He also remembers which upperclass he learned from and respected, and which ones were just power-tripping mouth-breathers.
He will be the type that teaches and helps Plebes - because he learned that they're all in this together with a common goal - with only 4 years to get there.

Can you share which type platform he has been assigned? Not necessarily the name or location.

I asked my son what he remembers from I day, he said it was long, it was hot , there was a lot of yelling,

I finally was able to ask mine, home on leave. Thought I would get some general comment. Instead he detailed almost the entire day. Wow. Must have made an impression! I NEVER get details!

I Responded that someone on the forums mentioned yelling and hot. He said ‘yeah there was that too!’

Best wishes for a successful experience. I’m currently in that AOR helping my son move 3 hours and worlds away to 29 Palms.

Welcome to California! By any chance 3/4?
