New Student Indoctrination (Summer 2019)

Is there anyone on here with a kid from UPenn? My kid is at OSU but my friend’s kid is there from UPenn and wants to connect with some parents.

My son is attending session 2, so I'm really curious to hear how session 1 goes. For the kids who flew in yesterday, did they take their phones? Will they have any access to a phone or email during the 3 weeks?

I am planning to attend the oath ceremony and I heard it will take about an hour. Any idea if there is a Q&A before or after? I have to schedule a return flight so I want to make sure I dont miss anything.

My DS is going to UPenn...he is at the first session of NSI now.
Do you all have a group chat or anything? Could I give her her contact info? I tried to PM you, but it said I couldn't contact you. If you could message me, that would be great.

Just dropped my DS off at building 49. Bus was picking up at 9 am so we just left him on the picnic bench. One other kid walked up alone and a girl was walked up by her parents and then parents came back to car. Hot day in Illinois today. Heading home to watch swearing in on Facebook I guess. Six hour drive.
DS said yesterday his NROTC group he was chatting with died after they landed, like they were told to turn phones off. He never heard anything else from.

My daughter had her phone, but there has been no contact since she was checked in at the USO in Terminal 2 at Chicago O'Hare.

I wonder if the kids who fly in the day before end up getting an unexpected extra day of indoc? The fact that kids have gone radio silent leads me to believe that it's likely not a relaxed environment. I went through indoc over 30 years ago and I didn't want any more time than I had to do.

My DS called me from the USO yesterday after check in and let me know that they were told all phones had to be turned off from then on.

Sounds like it. She was thinking she was going to have a day to relax before it all hit, but it doesn't look like it!

Talked to my DS called three times
Twice on the plane as they waited to deplane and one in the USO, was a quick called not hurried but quick, I told him I was proud of him and loved him and told him I’d talk to him in three weeks

Yep got the same call yesterday. Saying bye no more calls for 3 weeks. Hopefully I get a glimpse of him on the webcast tonight, lol.

The OIC for the 4/C in my DS's unit had a webinar last week to talk about what to expect at NSI. Unfortunately he didn't really have much information since this is a new program. He wasnt sure what happened after check in at the USO for those who come in the day before, and he also thought they would get the phone back after a week or so to make a call. I'm thinking that might not be correct.

Phones will be taken today (Day 1). They will not have them for 3 weeks but will have them returned on graduation day. This was confirmed by NROTC directly on their Facebook page yesterday. The kids who flew in yesterday may well have had theirs until this morning before check in and processing.

We just dropped our DD off this morning for check in (in a parking lot) and her phone has not been back on since. It’s possible she may have a chance to make another call or text before her small backpack is taken to be stored. When she checked in they reminded her to have her photo ID handy and $200 for her supplies. Everything else will be provided. She did also hand carry copies of all her paperwork (releases, immunization record, travel orders etc) which were noted as required copies to bring along in her early paperwork rec’d. She also brought a starter kit of toiletries and she has long hair thus brought hair ties and bobby pins as well. Medications are also allowed, should those be necessary. It was noted in the Penn State correspondence with their unit candidates all of that was ok. That was shared on this thread last week. Glasses are also to be brought and contacts are allowed though may not be advised for some evolutions. There are some great posts here with great lists to help kids who didn’t get as much prep information from their units. My DD went based off of the awesome info shared here. Her unit didn’t send her the breakdown that PSU provided.

But No Phones is noted under the Red Cross emergency post on the NROTC Facebook in the comments where they responded directly.

It sounds like there are about 500 kids in block 1. Most flew in.

We will be attending the oath ceremony today. The link to watch is also on the NROTC Facebook page under thenlice stream post ... then click discussions and the play button from there. It is at 5pm central time. You and your son may enjoy watching to get a line on that. 2nd block kids will have a lot more to go on than 1st block due to information and experience sharing that will surely follow.

Oh mi gosh!! Yes!!!! I was just thinking as I read here .... wait ..... was that MNMom66. I saw your Minnesota plates and thought .... it has to be after reading here. Aaaah. Will I see you again later today ?

Just popping in to say a couple of us have started a FB group... cannot link here, but in case anyone wants to join to become part of this new, bigger family, search NRTOC Parents and answer questions to join.

I was going to try starting a watch party from the group for swearing in, but not sure it will work (have not tried before).

What do our kids travel in after the graduation? Uniforms issued? They only had the kids who fly in pack an extra set of clothes for today. I haven’t seen anything posted about this or instructions on what to wear.
