More complete address during Plebe Summer

Hmmm...the email received from the USNA just prior to I-Day included a more abbreviated address. Which is best to use?

The abbreviated address is fine and will work. However, people are having a problem when dropping off packages. The postal workers are insisting that a street address be used, most likely because their computer says so. I insisted they send my package as is, and I verified that is was delivered. The 1 Wilson Ave is the street address for the USNA Post Office. It is used for UPS and FedEx deliveries. It is not needed for USPS deliveries, but I'd rather get my package sent with no headaches, so I'll go ahead and use it the remainder of Plebe Summer.

Use what you were instructed by USNA to use for plebe summer. The academic year will have a different address. But plebe summer, detailers pick up and deliver mail from USNA post office en made for their whole company. Then the detailers sort and deliver. This is different than the academic year where it’s sorted and delivered to each mid by the USNA postal service.

Initially, it’s takes longer to get stuff sorted and delivered due to the huge influx of parents mailing stuff right away. So be patient and know that as the summer progresses, things even out. It takes a minute to get it all going.

As far as local post offices, it’s not a new issue to have some resistance. Same thing happened last year (resistance to mailing to the USNA provided address). That, too, will work out. When they see you each week sending a package [emoji51].

A little FYI we learned: the REGIONAL boxes are generally CHEAPER to ship, verses PRIORITY. But you have to ask them for the regional ones. Regional are based on distance and weight, whereas priority are a standard fee regardless of distance or weight. If I was sending super heavy items, I would maybe use priority. But 9/10 times, regional was cheaper. And over Plebe year it made a significant difference!

Happy mailing!!

All plebes and their parents are given two addresses. A P.O. box for letters. A street address for packages. Both are short and straightforward.

The address listed on the USNA site is correct to use during plebe summer. You don't have to necessarily have to include Wilson Rd, but as an earlier poster indicated not including "Wilson Road" could cause an issue/questions at the post office where it is dropped off. It never did for us during two plebe summers. Also, Plebes will get their PO Box numbers close to PPW. That will be their PO Box number for their entire time at USNA. There are not separate addresses for letters versus packages.

Exactly.

Actually, there are. USNA makes clear that USPS deliveries should go to the P.O. box. USNA also makes clear that UPS and FedEx deliveries (specifically, packages) should go to Wilson Road. These parcels, if sent to P.O. box, will eventually get to the mid. But according to USNA, they’ll get to the mid a lot faster if sent to Wilson Road.

Of course now the link in the original post is going back to the original address format for Plebe Summer. It DID have the Wilson Rd address added to it the past 2 days. I don't want anyone thinking that @eagle18navy23 was seeing things in his sleep.

We called the USNA post office when our local post office did not want to accept the abbreviated address. The worker at USNA said she had talked to DOZENS of local post offices to explain that the shortened address was indeed correct (and how to enter it into the USPS computer system). Perhaps they briefly considered changing it to avoid all the questions - ?

Our local post office had only a minor problem. They said they are used to similar single-zip address for tax returns etc. The postal worker immediately recognized the address as going to USNA (and thanked me for my son's service, which really embarrassed me).

There was a time in my memory when the post office would go to extraordinary lengths to deliver mail with partial addresses. When I was a kid, I sent my uncle (whom every called "Steamboat" because he was an engineer on the Great Lakes ore boats) a letter that was addressed only as: "Steamboat, UP" and the post office delivered it (UP stands for "Upper Peninsula of Michigan").
