I'm currently a High School student going into my Senior year. I understand how competitive it is to receive an appointment, but I would still like to know if I'm at least on the right track. Some of my current achievements:

Academic:
GPA: 3.44 Unweighted, 3.81 Weighted. (I take numerous AP and Honor classes, but as far as I know, they only want the Unweighted GPA to see if I'm an eligible candidate)

SAT: Currently I sit at a composite of 1150 with 570 Verbal and 580 Math. I know for a fact this isn't up to standard and I'm waiting on my most recent test scores to come on July 10th. (I think it's important to mention that I didn't study for either test so far, which isn't a very smart move, but I feel optimistic with my most recent test).

ACT: I've taken this with a composite of 23, Math score of 21, English & Reading score of 22, Science score of 26
I understand that these are nowhere near what they need to be so I probably won't list them on my application

Class Rank: I rank 38/239 which is in the top 16% of my class.

NHS: I'm not sure whether NHS falls under Academic or leadership, but I'm our classes Treasurer, which probably would be considered a leadership role.

School Activities:
Sports:
Baseball: I've played Varsity Baseball since I was a Freshman as my school doesn't have JV. I've become Captain my Junior year and will be in my Senior year as well. So I will have 4 Varsity letters total come Graduation. This year I also won MVP as well as Pitcher of the Year. I'm not sure if me being a Junior makes it any more impressive or not, however. I'd love to be recruited for the Falcons to play, but I'm not sure if I'm good enough for Division 1.

JROTC Raiders: Another "sport" I compete in is my JROTC Raider Team. I've also been the Captain of this since my Junior year and will be again next year. I call this a sport because I get two Varsity letters for it, and it's also the most physically active activity I do at my school. For those of you who don't know what Raiders is, it's a team-based competition sport where we compete in physical events such as a 5K or a Tire Flip.

JROTC Drill Team: I'm not sure if this is a sport but I do receive Varsity letters from it so I'm going to count it. I'm the Executive Officer for my Drill team as well as the Color Guard Commander and the Armed Platoon Drill Commander.

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Clubs:
I participate in the Principles Multicultural Advisory Club, Black Student Union, and NHS. As mentioned earlier I am the Treasurer for NHS.

Volunteer Hours:
Through JROTC I have racked up over 70 hours of community service through Color Guards / volunteering various places.

I also mentor struggling students through a program at my school which has given me almost nearly 100 hours but I've only had about 60 signed off on. I also understand this could be used as leadership as well.

BETA Program:
My school's magnet program is a program that focuses on Business Engineering and Technology. I fall under the Networking pathway in my program, which aligns with what I'd like to do in the Air Force. Through this program, I've earned multiple Industry Certifications such as:

Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, MTA: Security Fundamentals, MTA: Mobility and Devices Fundamentals, CIW Internet Business Associate,
CIW Networking Technology Associate

and I plan on getting CompTIA Security Plus, which is a professional level Certification next year at least.
I'm also a Student Ambassador for BETA if that helps any.

Leadership:
This category is where I think I truly excel as I have more than most.

JROTC:
Next year I'll be my Battalions Battalion Commander (Basically Cadet in charge of every Cadet). I've also served as my Battalion S-3 (Operations Officer) and will also serve as CSM and XO.

As I've mentioned before I am our Raider Team Commander, Drill Team XO, Color Guard Commander, and Armed Platoon Commander.

Everything else:
  • NHS Treasurer
  • Baseball Team Captain
  • Student Mentor
  • Student Ambassador
  • Attended JCLC twice (Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge)
Awards and Recognitions:
  • The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Award and Medal (JROTC)
  • American Veterans Association Award and Medal (JROTC)
  • The rank of C/ LTC in JROTC
  • Position of Raider Team Commander
  • Position of Drill Team XO
  • Position of Color Guard Commander
  • Position of Armed Platoon Commander
  • Position of 2019-2020 JROTC Battalion Commander
  • Position of Baseball Team Captain
  • MVP the 2019 Varsity Baseball Season
  • 2019 Pitcher of the Year for Varsity Baseball
Work Experience:
I've worked two jobs, one part-time and I'm working a full-time job now. Both are Summer jobs so I don't know if they're too applicable. I also have an Internship at Home Shopping Network through my school.

I believe that is all, thank you for taking your time and reading all of this. Please let me know if I look like a qualified enough Candidate for USAFA or even the Prep School.

Your chance is Zero if you do not apply.

That being said, I would work on that SAT score. It is low compared to the published averages and places you in the bottom 25%.

Khan Academy has a free tutoring program or you can buy a paid program from Prep Scholar and many others.

Otherwise, keep taking the hardest classes you can, keep working on leadership (JROTC is great), and ace the CFA.

Good luck!

Thank you for responding!
I definitely plan to load get higher scores for the SAT / ACT, and I've signed up for 5 college courses already for next year. I'll also continue practicing for the CFA. Thanks!

Leadership and sports OUTSTANDING. Definitely work on the SAT score. Also, definitely apply. If they like your application but they think your academics are not quite strong enough, they may send you to NAPS. Also, have a Plan B, C and D. Also, check out the Navy's NPP scholarship on the Navy NROTC page under scholarships. This could be a chance for your NJROTC Senior Naval Science Instructor to recommend you for a 5 year scholarship which would include a prep year. Check out Notre Dame's program. I think the Navy is looking for people like you with the NPP program, which is new.

GaitherDad, unless he's got something spectacular he's holding back, he's not getting into Notre Dame.

Your SAT/ACT scores are pretty low, and I would strongly STRONGLY recommend a tutoring program, ASAP. You've got the summer to study.

I don't want to be a DebbieDowner, but those scores really have to come up. And recall: especially at USAFA, it's known as the "Little Engineering College in the Rockies." EVERYONE earns a Bachelor of SCIENCE, not a BArts. It is heavily weighted toward STEM. Everyone takes Engineering, Math, Chemistry, etc.
Bring up those scores! It will help you in the civilian college world as well.

Best of luck

It's so hard to tell- on paper so many of us look amazing! Heck, a year ago when my DS got the TWE he looked amazing on paper, but he just didn't have what they wanted at that time.

Yeah, get those test scores up- 1150 is gonna be hard to overcome without being related to a multi-star general...

All that being said here's my advice: Be the kind of person people want to be around. Be a strong leader, volunteer, be easy and fun to talk to- and do all of these things with a true love and passion for being a stellar human being. As far as I can tell, the Academies are looking for well-rounded people, the best and brightest to represent our entire country. Make yourself someone EVERYONE wants to know. Let that shine from within and it will show on the outside. I don't mean this in a hippy-dippy way: I mean this in a "we inspire others by our actions" kinda way.

AND, if you don't make it in to the class of 2024, don't lose faith. As sooooo many other folks told me: there are MANY paths to commissioning as an officer. Apply a second time (this application isn't easy- they admire and appreciate the grit it takes to apply again- it's daunting.) Consider a prep school (Marion Military Institute is where my kids went, but Northwest Prep is where you go if you want killer standardized test scores- drill drill drill.) Study old threads here, use the search feature, reach out to us here when you need specific help: this community here is amazing.

Best of luck and keep us posted! I believe in you, and congratulations on considering this journey!

GaitherDad, unless he's got something spectacular he's holding back, he's not getting into Notre Dame.

I was referring to The NROTC Preparatory Program (NPP). It is very new and very few are familiar with it. Notre Dame is a just one participating school. If accepted, the student does a year at Holy Cross, trains with the NROTC unit at Notre Dame and if he successfully completes the prep year at Holy Cross, he automatically receives a 4 year scholarship to Notre Dame. It is similar to NAPS, but with private schools and NROTC instead of the USNA. This program is taylor made for this young man. It is worth a shot. There are other less competitive schools that also participate in the program to which he could also apply.

RUDY! for NROTC.

Lots of ND grads begin their college careers at Holy Cross. Good program.

I wasn't aware of it (not keeping up so much with Navy), and am glad to know of its existence.
