Is tomorrow’s call with our Plebe a voice call only or can they FaceTime / Skype with video? Of course, it would be nice to see them.

Voice call only. No FaceTime, no Skype, no texting, no social media, no internet use.

To plebe parents anticipating that first call, let your mid lead the conversation. The first 1 1/2 weeks are very tough. They are shell shocked and exhausted and stressed. Some are willing to speak profusely about all they’ve been through. Others just want to hear about what’s going on at home. Beware of the “parental interrogation.” With only 30 minutes, let them say what they want to say and hear what they want to hear.

I feel like a coyote with one leg in a trap if I have to speak on the phone for more than 10 minutes. I am ready to start gnawing it off after minute 7.

30 minutes? They really get that long?

Might be the one instance left in which a teenager is willing to use the “voice” capability of a phone that doesn’t either constitute a dire emergency or pushing numbers in response to recorded instructions.

DD was excited and talkative! She said the stress level can get high but is completely manageable. I asked her wants in preparation for PPW.....Answer: SLEEP!

And there’s a good data point which aligns with much of the PPW advice - let the plebes’ needs and desires set the sked. Unstructured time, long showers, naps in cool clean sheets in peace and quiet, favorite foods, social media, relaxing with family, minimal time in uniform of the day out in the heat - just roll with it.

My DS said it has been “very fun.” He is in terrific shape so that really helps. Also, he’s had lots of experience with extended trips away from the family. I think getting into the best shape of your life can completely change one’s outlook on PS. He’s decided to do boxing for his sport, even though he’s never boxed (he’s a wrestler in high school). Frankly I’ve never heard him so upbeat. Also, having a Napster for a roommate has helped - they have enough time in the morning to help others in his squad make their racks. He’s failed at stuff but he’s taking that as a challenge.

When we hung up we all realized he was born for this.

If it makes you feel any better, I received a 10-minute call well after the designated time. I didn't ask any specifics. I just enjoyed every second talking to my DS. No complaints from this mom:D

During 7/21 PS phone call with our DS, he mentioned that he was not given a spare set of sheets, so is unable to send bedding out with laundry. Just wondering if he is missing something, or its expected that they use the same sheets for all of PS. Any advice?

I feel like my Plebe last summer didn’t even sleep in his sheets! I have no idea actually. It’s a random thing to talk about during a phone call, is it something that bothers him? Personally wouldn’t bother me or my Plebe, he was so exhausted he could sleep on a board, and I would be thankful for the sleep.

My advice is that it’s no big deal. And will get figured out soon.

They are issued more than 1 set. During moving rooms or something he may of lost a set or a room mate now has 2 extra sets. He can ask his detailers or during a trip to the mid store get another set. Guessing he isn’t even sleeping in his sheets. Mids sleep on top of their racks. Summer time probably with not much of anything as it’s pretty warm still.

.
Think if he was camping 2/3 weeks away from civilization, no electricity, in the heat and humidity all day.
.
At least now he has AC. I would say the conditions are wonderful where he is.
