I have never heard of a High School being able to sponsor someone for Boys Nation. There are only 100 from the entire USA.I don't think it will hurt, but it won't be a major boost either.
My DS lobbied to get his HS school to begin sponsoring for Boys Nation after years of dormancy and was successful in opening up the program again. He ended up as an alternate!
Consider contacting your local American Legion branch and ask if you can attend as a self-sponsor.
Absolutely add it to your application, this is a huge accomplishment, especially if your state is one of the larger Girls State programs.I was selected as an alternate for my states Girls Nation. Is this something that would be beneficial to add to my application or would it be better to leave it off?

You're missing the point. The HS was inactive in the STATE program. Boys (and Girls) Nation is a different program entirely and high schools andI have never heard of a High School being able to sponsor someone for Boys Nation
My apologies. Let me clarify.
The HS nominated a single student to the American Legion to sponsor.
Apparently the HS had been inactive on this program for many years until my DS brought it up to the guidance counselors.
Which is why I "push" Boys/Girls State to my students as hard as I do. For several years our school didn't even send anyone. I pitched a...well...let's just say that in the last four years, three of my students have gone and I have a young lady that will be at Girls Nation later this month! You're missing the point. individual legion posts do not nominate anyone for it. I am a Trustee for our Boys State Program and heavily involved in conducting it.
We had about 900 statesmen this year and TWO of them went on to Boys Nation.

LOL, I got selected as an alternate for Boy's Nation. There's only 8 hours until a flight from my city to Washington takes off... I wonder if there's still time for a delegate to call in sick.I was selected as an alternate for my states Girls Nation.
Yes, they still do the program. Our DS made it through all 4 rounds this past spring and finished 2nd in the state. A great program. He met Legion and Auxiliary members and when he was applying to Boys State they were very familiar with him. It was a great experience and he gained a lot of confidence going through it. I would highly recommend it to any young lady or gentlemen. They as well as VFW also have written essay and poetry contests each year that are great to compete in. He was a finalist in Auxiliary essay contest at the state level and is now waiting for the results of the National contest. Great programs for sure!I may be a little late to add to this discussion, but if you attended Boys or Girls State, contact the American Legion or Auxiliary that sponsored you and ask about their oratory contest. I didn't know the speech contest existed until the lady who sponsored me mentioned and I managed to make it a couple levels up. The award is prize money that they can send to West Point to be part of your cadet account. I participated four years ago, so I'm not sure if they still do the oratory competition, but it might be worth asking about if you are interested. Good luck!
