Room and Board

I am under the impression that there are no up to date lists outside of this forum, which is likely out of date. Does anyone know if CMU, MIT, or Stanford offer room and board for AFROTC Scholarship recipients? I have seen that CMU offers for NROTC, but I don't think anyone has asked for AFROTC. Thanks!

MIT does not. If you check the college locator and "see more" it will list if they DO cover R&B. If it's not listed, they do not. https://www.afrotc.com/college-locator

True, if you meant R&B offer based on merit, i.e. AFROTC scholarship.

However, it is NOT true in a sense of 100% meet policy. MIT will provide R&B, if a family demonstrate their needs. This policy is applicable for every admits, not just ROTC scholarship awardee.

example #1:
MIT COA : $73,160
institutional EFC: $20,000
AFROTC scholarship : $53,450 (AFROTC TYPE 1, assuming AF tabs full tuition)
Demonstrated needs: $0
<--- This family will not get any aid from MIT

example #2:
MIT COA : $73,160
institutional EFC: $5,000
AFROTC scholarship : $18,000 (AFROTC TYPE 2, capped at $18,000/yr)
Scholarship from source #1: $5000
Demonstrated needs: $45,160
<--- This family gets aid from MIT in the amount of $45,160

Need blind means that we don’t consider your ability to pay for college in the admissions process; full need means we are committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need with our aid.

Penn State University says Room & Board are NOT covered ...(called 2 weeks ago)

My DD will be attending Syracuse University on a 3yr AD AROTC scholarship. All scholarship recipients (3 and 4yr) receive free Room and Board for all 4 years of attendance.

In addition, 3 year AD recipients are given free tuition for their freshman year, making all four years at Syracuse (which has a cost north of 70k a year) effectively free!

These same benefits also apply to the AFROTC program at Syracuse.

For a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship -- does Room & Board only cover on-campus (dorm, meal plan, etc.)? Or is there a stipend that one could use to live off campus?

AROTC USUALLY only covers "on campus" R&B. Many of the institutions actually have specific dorms and meal plans they use and if you want the perk you have to use what is offered. I do not think any ROTC scholarships offer "free money" to live wherever and eat wherever. Most institutions have ROTC cadets live together to train and study together. Easier to get everyone up at 0530 for PT if you are in the same dorm...:) DS was offered 4yr National AROTC but was assigned dorm and roommate and was not given a choice. Still a GREAT deal, just don't take advantage of the opportunity.

There is so much wrong with this.
A few institutions, particularly SMCs, have ROTC cadets room together. Most do not.
AROTC gives an allowance for room and board, when that option is chosen, which can be used on campus or off campus. Many colleges require freshman to live on campus.

I can only speak towards my family's experiences, and both sons were NOT offered "R&B Stipends" but only offered on campus housing and were assigned roommates. If this is not the case nationwide I am sorry for misstating what occurs. This was thru two different schools in two different states, and since I personally did not read the scholarship fine print (both sons declined the scholarships) I was under the impression that it was common. Sorry for the mistake, I will clarify my answers hence forth.

For an Army ROTC scholarship, If Room and Board is elected the Cadet will receive a flat rate payment of $5,000 per semester that the scholarship is effective.

Has any of the military branches ever considered paying room and board in addition to tuition for a 5 year AD commitment similar to a service academy?

It should also be noted that the IRS will NOT consider funds from an Army scholarship used for tuition and mandatory fees as taxable income, but the IRS WILL consider such funds applied toward room and board as taxable income.

Not to my knowledge but then the history of the scholarships goes back to before my time.

MIne twins are both applying for AROTC with Syracuse as their first choice specifically for that reason. Syracuse is awesome. My older son won an AROTC there but wound up going to USMA.

Help for Room and Board for the Citadel?
Negative. They do offer some incentives, the following from The Citadel website:

ROTC Enhancement (effective Fall of 2008)
The Armed Forces Scholarship Program has been established to assist the Air Force, Army, and Navy ROTC Detachments at The Citadel in bringing the best and brightest officer candidates to the school. Prospective students must have a minimum 1200 SAT (or 27 ACT), a minimum high school GPR of 3.2, and have accepted an ROTC scholarship prior to matriculation as a freshman at The Citadel in order to be considered. Recipients of the scholarship will receive an annual award of $3500 for each year in which they receive the ROTC Scholarship. Recipients of the Armed Forces Scholarship will be notified by The Citadel's Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
A student must maintain a 3.0 minimum GPR to maintain the Armed Forces Scholarship. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the scholarship. The Armed Forces Scholarship will not be reinstated once it has been lost.
Students who are awarded an ROTC Scholarship after matriculating at The Citadel are not eligible for an Armed Forces Scholarship.

Tulane offers rotc free room and board! Also several state colleges offer school awarded scholarships to cover room and board for rotc cadets.
