Basic Cadet Training (BCT) has been underway since 6/27/19, what are the initial thoughts and feedback that parents have heard from the Class of 2023? What have you been hearing from DS or DS?

I have heard it is tough but fair. He's tired, lost weight and is learning the ropes. We have received 4 letters and each one is a little better than the last. We have seen pictures of intramurals on the 4th, drill practice, and squadron training.

To quote: "This s*** sucks! But it's manageable"
And that was before the first day of PT
PT sucks too, by the way.
All in all, DS sounded positive. He knows that there is a method to the madness and is trying hard to learn the ropes and stay in line.

The altitude was still a shock to him - even though I told him many times that it was going to be a bigger deal than he expected. Good spirits. 2 positive 341s within the first week. He was also surprised by the level of detail that is required. I was glad to hear that First Beast is still toeing the line. The photos on Web Guy are awesome.

FOUR LETTERS?! You rate! I have gotten two, but that was a shock, I didn't think I would hear from my kid.

DD is excellent at describing the various levels of suck she is experiencing. We laughed when she wrote wake ups are “violent” However, all letters (14 so far) have the same theme
“I belong to something so much bigger than myself”
“This is beautiful, I have found my home for the next four years”
We are so proud she is part of USAFA CLASS OF 2023! #flyfightwin

We have gotten 6 letters to date. Each one is a little better. The one we received today was the most "normal" of the lot. It was dated 7/10 so it is taking ~5 days to process through USPS. I am not sure he has received many of our letters though as he hasn't mentioned them or responded to questions we have asked. Looking forward to Saturday for the phone call home!

DS is doing well, he grew attached to his cadre, last letter he quoted them on Rodeo Day as saying “he was the heartbeat of the flight and the glue that held them together”. I’d say he’s holding his own.

They get to call home on Saturday? Do you know what time? I'll want to keep my phone close.

Last year they departed for Doolie Day out between 0830 - 0930 Mountain Time,
so any time after that until late afternoon is when you can expect a call.

WOW that is a great post. What is his flight?
As far as the calls on Saturday for freshman day out it depends on your timezone. Just keep your phone handy.
BTW they are now called Freshman we have stopped using Doolie at USAFA. ( I believe the actual definition was demeaning. You can ask your DD/DS about it)

Not to be argumentative, but asked DD, a firstie, about the terminology. She immediately responded that they would be corrected and get in trouble for using the term "freshman". She said they are Doolies (definition and origin of the term is in the 2023 Contrails), C4C (cadet 4th class), 4-degrees, or 4-digs. Of course, none of these terms/names apply until completion of BCT and acceptance into the Wing on A-Day.

DS also confirmed that Doolie is still being used and Freshman is not. Other terms of endearment from years passed that are probably not sanctioned were SMACK (Soldier Minus Ability Coordination and Knowledge) and 4-smoke.

DD and DH, '79 grad, also mentioned a few other terms that were used in the past but no longer deemed acceptable.

DDO phone call confirmed DS’s progress at BCT, he gave me some specifics that are surprising, he said the Cadre have stopped having them do PT in hall ways and the PT in general was much easier than he expected. He couldn’t understand how many basics were falling and getting concussions (his words were there have been 12-15 in his squadron alone).

We heard the same thing about both the concussions and the PT. DS said that hallway PT was suspended due to the spread of the cold that is going around (DS has it). He also stated that the cadre are not permitted to use PT as punishment. He said the longest run he's been on for PT has been about a mile.

DS confirmed the longest run had been just over a mile. I thought that was surprising.

He is also one who has had the bug going around. He said Saturday he had been sick for close to two weeks. I have seen pictures of him in a mask on and off for the past week too. He sounded awful on the phone. The biggest complaint was that the illness was making it hard to sleep and making him more exhausted than he would otherwise be :-(

Hopefully, the open air at Jack's Valley will do him some good.

My DS said his squadron used PT as punishment. Cadre counted every second they were waiting for a basic in the flight & added them up at the end of the day as “wasted time”. Those seconds translated into reps of PT. The highest day was 1600 reps for “wasted time”. Even still, DS reports his cadre are strict but fair.

He said the food is good and the formalities of eating at attention don’t bother him too much.

He’s doing pretty well but also has the cold that’s going around. He sounded terrible at DDO but I haven’t seen him in a mask at Jack’s.

WebGuy! We have 100% confidence the Academy knows what they are doing and they are taking great care of the Basic cadets. It is awesome to see proof of life every couple of days. Doolie day out was great to hear first hand some of the awesome things they’ve experienced. Cadre are tough, but fair & actually want them to succeed! DS said they laugh all time.
