Hello everyone! I am currently a rising High School Senior. I plan on applying to the Merchant Marine and Naval Academy this semester, and I turned in my Preliminary Application yesterday. I’m just wondering the opinion of you all as if whether my stats are impressive enough for USMMA & USNA admission.

My academic stats are:

3.90 Unweighted GPA/4.29 Weighted GPA

SAT Math: 530, SAT EBRW: 550, SAT Reading: 28, SAT Writing and Language: 27, Total Score: 1080

ACT Math: 20, ACT English: 23, Composite Score of 21

(I plan on retaking these tests for better scores)

Rank 22/697

I also have taken many AP Classes, such as AP Art History, APUSH, AP Eng Lang, AP World History, AP Bio, and APHUG. I have also taken plenty of Honors classes.

Extracurriculars: I have acted as

Treasurer for my school’s Class of 2020 for two years,

Asian International Association Club Treasurer for Seven months,

AP Club Vice President for one year,

MCJROTC Squad Leader for 3 semesters,

Asian International Association Culture Night Committee member for 7 months,

Ran as a distance runner for JV Track and field,

Ran as a member of JV Cross Country,

and played on the school Varsity Quiz Bowl team (also known as Academic League)

I also plan on joining the Robotics team and I am also an Autodesk Certified: Inventor User, as I have took an Engineering course in my school.

I also have completed 129 community service hours as I am an Altar Boy at my church, cleaned up my community, and helped in setting up a Filipino Cultural Festival.

I have some time left, and I am currently preparing myself physically for the Academy. I’d like to thank you very much for taking the time to read and to respond. :)

I'm not as familiar with the SAT, but your ACT scores are way too low, especially math. The average composite ACT at USMMA is 27-28. Keep working on it and take it every time it's offered. Take an ACT prep class. My daughter improved her composite score by 6 points between the first and last times she took it, so there is hope.

Your SATs are below the mins for admissions. Technically they cannot appoint you until you have better scores. You might be a good candidate for sponsored prep though and it looks like you need it. People with much higher SAT scores have fail out plebe year.

Taking Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry would also help to demonstrate you can handle the academic rigor. Your only APs science is a life science, not a physical science.

I agree with all of the above. You need to demonstrate strong math skills and your profile currently doesn't do that. There are some online resources like Kahn where you can load in your SAT sub scores and it will set up a program for you. Do it for 30 minutes a day, every single day. Your school or local library probably has SAT and ACT prep courses. Take them.

Do the physical fitness test and see where you are on that. You may find you need to improve in certain areas to meet the minimums. Get in touch with your Congressional reps. Their application deadlines can be early.

Good luck to you. You have work to do, but it's not impossible.

@almightyloaf53 If you are interested in a career at sea or otherwise in the marine industry, I would suggest that you check out the state Maritime Academies as well. SUNY, Maine, Mass, Galveston, Great Lakes, and California.
