I heard when Tom Cruise was filming on the carrier (I don’t recall which one) he pissed off everyone so badly that the crew was ordered not to speak to him

He was probably unhappy with the rebound index of the Navy-issue sofas in the squadron ready room.
Meow.

I think also Theodore Roosevelt. But I did some more reading and found that the Navy’s official position is that Tom Cruise acted appropriately and that some of the rumors that he was arrogant and pissed off the crew are not true.

In any event, Top Gun is great PR for the Navy

Yep, the inport scenes were on TR and flight deck scenes from Lincoln as I just read.

In 1987 a Marine buddy of of mine in the Air Wing (not really a Marine) said if there were really such a hotshot (as the fictional character "Maverick") , egotistical aviator in his squadron somebody would have "accidently" left a wrench in the engine before flight. I pointed out that the F-14 Tomcat was a two-man airplane. He responded with "Oh well" and a shrug.

On an unrelated note, I've heard of commercial fishermen out of local ports like New Bedford & Gloucester also "accidently" pushing obnoxious fellow crewman off the boat into the chilly (and lethal) North Atlantic waters for a variety of reasons. Commercial fisherman die at a higher percentage than policemen, firemen or even convenience store clerks.
