How does school selection work for ROTC scholarships?

I’d like to preface this by saying I’m a rising senior who is in the process of applying to Army ROTC. I am trying to decide how to rank the schools on my list, but it’s hard to find definitive details about how the scholarships work in regards to different schools.

If I list 7 schools, what happens when my application is reviewed? Do I need approval by each school to be accepted, or does it work like if I’m accepted for a scholarship, I am automatically accepted to my first choice school’s unit? I’d really like some clarification about this, since I’m sort of in a unique situation.

I’m applying to many top schools which I will likely be unable to afford without an ROTC scholarship. However, since they’re top schools, my chances of getting in are slim. For example, I currently have Stanford listed as my #1 school, but I will most likely not be accepted to Stanford. How does the process work in general?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi,
I am currently applying for the AROTC scholarship as well.

If you are selected as a winner, you will be placed at up to three of the schools you listed. It all depends on the availability of scholarships at the schools.

The whole “you are only placed at your first choice school” thing is for NROTC and NROTC MO. You are not automatically selected for your first choice school if chosen for the scholarship, to the best of my teenage knowledge.

Even being offered an ROTC scholarship. Does NOT assure one of school admission. (It doesn't hurt, though).

Thanks, I know that getting the scholarship from a school doesn’t mean you got in to the school. I’m talking about “admission” to the school’s ROTC unit.

In the freshman and sophomore year, or Basic course, there is no screen for AROTC. All students admitted to the college can enroll in Army ROTC classes.

However, you must earn a scholarship or a contract for admission to the Advanced course beginning junior year.

There is definitely a reason the application advises putting down 7 schools, be sure to do this and besides your dream/reach schools include "safe schools" for admission. The more options the better! College admissions is super competitive, and you don't want to find yourself scrambling with a scholarship and no school to use it at.

No, the scholarship will be awarded with the assumption that you have applied an been accepted.

See Above

Bottom line, if you are awarded a scholarship and for some reason you cannot get into that school (failure to apply is not a acceptable reason) you can request to have the scholarship transferred.
