My DS and I recently met with a ROO who, after seeing DS’s JROTC involvement, said the ROTC scholarship boards have about 200 slots to give to outstanding JROTC cadets. I’m not sure I heard correctly, because I can’t find any mention of it anywhere. Have any of you heard such a thing? Am I crazy? Thanks, awesome people!

Yeah, it's called Alternative Scholarship Reservation (NROTC), and it's how I got picked up. Have DS ask his SNSI about it, typically it's a side load sheet and a SNSI letter of rec that gets routed through the Area Manager and goes to the board. It was the second to last board to convene when I went up, with the last being the MSISR board.

Definitely pursue this.

Edit:
My experience was through NJROTC going to NROTC, and can only speak for my experiences with those programs.

Thanks, BarryD.

Do you know if it exists for AROTC?

Not sure what it's like for the AROTC side. A SMI or a PMS would be more qualified to answer than I would.

There are JROTC scholarships awarded during the national high school scholarship boards. It is mainly due to the JROTC students finishing higher on the OML due to the additional activity points they receive for JROTC.

Great., thank you! Happy to know this since we’d been given the feeling by a PMS that they don’t value it as much as one would think.

If I can add one piece of advice, once the application is complete and "board ready" make sure the student is in contact with the ROO(s) of the desired schools. Some times we are given the opportunity to reach into the board ready applicant pool and offer a JROTC 3 Year Advance Designee scholarship. Of course, if that happens before all boards are complete the student will have to sign an acknowledgement that the application w ill no longer compete within that award cycle (no chance of a 4 year offer).

Hmmm, can you tell me what would be the benefit of that, ie jumping at the 3yr and not waiting for the 4yr? Can you elaborate on when you decide to use this approach? I could be wrong, but I think my son has a shot at the 4yr. That said, I’ll be sure to pass on your advice to my DS. So, he’s to reach out to the ROOs BEFORE he’s been boarded at the beginning of October? I take it they don’t do a JROTC 4 Year Advance Designee? THANK YOU!

Here’s the thing about those JROTC offers. They are made after the third board. They are basically used to “police up” any of the JROTC kids that didn’t get a straight up National offer. My advice is don’t even worry about them at this point. After the second board if you don’t get an offer then you can start worrying about things like that (actually it’s something you shouldn’t worry about because it’s out of your control). And my friend Bama is right...you should always be in touch with your ROO of choice. The more they know you want to be an officer and want to attend your school the more they can help you any way they can.

GOT IT! Thanks!

Clarkson- Hope you are well my friend. I was getting lonely around here!

Haven’t checked the board in about a month...getting a little crazy!
