Hello! I'm currently waiting to start my sophomore year at a Jewish School. I am extremely determined to work my butt off in order to get good enough grades to have a competitive application. I am in the highest English and History classes, Honors Algebra 2 (One math class is taking Elementary Functions this year. I am seeing about getting into that class.) I am also in Honors Chem, and a special STEAM program offered by my school. I played soccer and lacrosse for my school last year, and this year I will play lacrosse and swim for my school. This year I will also lead my school's 9th and 10th grade TSA team. My problem is this. I know that the USAFA looks at the courses available, and compared that to the courses I took. Since I go to a Jewish school, we are required to take Hebrew (The language that Jew's use), Jewish Studies, and Tanakh. I did ok last year in Hebrew, but I think that with my newfound source of motivation I can do even better this year. I also got straight A's in JS and Tanakh. But my JS and Tanakh placements are based on my Hebrew placement. My Hebrew class is about the 3rd or 4th highest. SO I'm wondering, will my placements in Hebrew, Jewish Studies and Tanakh hurt me? Thank you for your time.

I HAVE NO IDEA...but I would think they would treat those classes kind of like foreign language classes...You start where you start and then keep going foward. Some kids start with Spanish 1 freshman year, some start with Spanish 2, and as long as you do well and make progress they are happy.

As opposed to Math and Science where strong students would have already taken some in middle school.

I would imagine that what is important is your overall class rank, GPA, SAT's and the grades in your STEM classes. Agree that Hebrew will be considered a foreign language. Also, Hebrew is similar to Arabic, and would give you a good foundation to start studying Arabic in college. I believe Arabic language proficiency is always sought after in the all branches of the military.

My guess is that Jewish Studies and Tanakh would be considerd a type of humanties class so while its grade would be important in terms of overall GPA, i dont think as a class itself it will any different from any other humanities class. As for Hebrew, it is going to be looked as a foreign language and i highly doubt they are going to care what level you start at as most people who take Spanish in high school start at the lowest level and work themselves to Spanish 2 if they only take 2 years of language.

The only thing is that I've been taking Hebrew every year since I was in Kindergarten.

There arent going to be any records that show you have been taking Hebrew since kindergarten unless you happen to mention it. All the records are going to show is the 2 or 3 years of Hebrew you took in High School. I dont know what kind of Jewish day school you went, (Orthodox vs Non Orthodox) but my kids went to conservative Jewish Day school most of the kids by 7th grade still only had a rudimentary knowledge of Hebrew

Yea, I've been taking it for a while, but I'm not very good. Hopefully, with my new mindset, I'll be able to improve on it, since it is a class that is graded.

Best of Luck!!

Are you learning Biblical Hebrew or Modern Hebrew? Or both?

My guess is Biblical would be treated the same as Latin.

IMHO, studying any foreign language is like work. It is, in and of itself a good thing, is a good thing.

It is Modern Hebrew.

Cant comment on Orthodox schools or Yeshivas, but only Modern Hebrew is taught in Jewish schools

I'm not going there because I'm ultra-orthodox or anything, but my parents wanted me to go to a Jewish school, and it has the best education pretty much anywhere around me, so I'm stickin with it.
